I remember reading a thread about Cali Spec being changed to Fed Spec.
I live in Florida and own a black SE...do I have a Fed spec, and if I do, why does the Fed sound better a y-pipe?

I think you got it backwards. The 2000 Maxes were available in Cali and Fed specs, while all 2001 models are Cali spec.

What have I got?

I have a 2000 Max...what have I got backwards?
My question is, "Which is better, and how bo I know which one I have?"

The Fed spec is obviously better (for performance), unless you are overly concerned about the environment. You most likely have a Fed spec car. Someone else may know more about how to check that.

Check the sticker under the hood. If it says meets NLEV or califonia specs....it is Cali spec

Take a look under you hood at the front side of your engine. If you can see some wires in a light blue shielding just below and to the right of your motor oil dipstick, then you have a CA emissions car.

I have a CA car and you can see pics of my engine at www.desertpearlmax.homestead.com/O2_Sensor.html or at the site in my sig.

Just a side note: Don't get confused with the fancy cover I have over my engine. This was new for the 2001's and has nothing to do with the emissions.
