Final words on the D2's *must read*

Ok I've been on the D2's for a few weeks now. A lot of you know about the noise problems some of us have had. I've been talking with Mike @ Urban and he has been very eager to help. I was having a loud popping or clunking noise coming from the passenger side front coilover. After thorough inspection and measuring, checking pre load and the rest of that crap. I came to the conclusion that it was either the strut or the pillow ball mount. Mike sent me a new replacement strut in like 2 days. Mike is very good with customer service and has definitely earned my repeat business. When I took the two front coilovers off and compared, the pillow ball mount was a little looser on the passenger side than the driver side. I first thought this was where the noise was coming. After disassembling the coilover, which is very simple and takes 2 minutes, I pressed the piston in on the strut. To my surprise it made a loud popping noise and a gurgling noise. Then it was so slow to rebound. My mind changed and I thought maybe this was all the noise? I installed the new strut and I also set the dampeners to the softest setting. Previously I had been running very firm because I cut the rod that goes down into the strut because it stuck up to high and was afraid the hood would hit. I know stupid, but I didn't know that the rod would go down farther into the strut as you changed the dampening setting. Now off for the drive.... Holy $h!t !!! First off NO noise. I went on some backward a$$ country rodes looking for noise. I got none, wisper quiet, and since I was able to set the struts on the softest setting, damn I thought I was in a cadillac brougham.:calder: If you are thinking about coilovers, you are a fool if you don't buy these. If you want a lowered ride with a soft ride, go with these. My car now rides better than it did stock. I've lowered the car even more 2.75" in the front and 2.5" in the rear. I'm not sure about other coilovers, but you can't beat the price, the ride, or the customer service at Urban. oh and sorry for the long thread

Good to hear everything worked out for ya. That noise problem held me back from purchasing these and going w/ JICs but seems like I will buy a set of D2s afterall.

steven88 Oct 24, 2004 01:22 AM

Glad to hear everything worked out for you Shawn.....

Btw i totally agree with him on the D2s being real smooth...i have mine set at 1/1 and lowered the car about 2.75 inches all around (both front & back, bottom of the floor to the middle fender is 25 inches flat).....this thing rides so smooth even lowered at this height.....just don't crank it up to 36/36 during daily driving or else your body internals will be in for a suprise....lol....

i would lower my car to about 4 inches all around but my rims/tires are holding me back....18x8.5 with 42mm offset isn't going to cut it....i would need a rim thats about 35mm offset to clear the inner fender from rubbing when i make u- turns....spacers would help, but i decided to just get new rims in the future with the correct offset to clear the coilover's height

Hey Skalberti, great infos, thanks for sharing it, that make me want to install my D2 now instead of next spring but I guess I will resist and save the D2 this coming winter.

I just tighted the collars up to the spring until they just start to touch the coil. You don't want the spring under any pressure when off of the car.

I did a lot of comparison and looked everything over. I had it narrowed down to the pillow ball mounts or the strut. D2 wanted to start with the strut.

raybone97-I30t Oct 26, 2004 08:06 AM

so urban import has replied "they have a new order coming in mid-november,, the price is now up to 875 shipped,,,or you can get a set flown from the factory at any time for 925........snooze ya lose, i guess. oh well... dont know if i can swing the extra 100,, was saving up for 825 allready....

Ammi Oct 26, 2004 08:09 AM

Maybe if there are enough buyers, Urban will lower their price

it's nice to know they have very good ride quality. But how about their performance when set to stiffer modes? how's the handling etc.?

Jumbo™ Oct 26, 2004 09:28 PM

Please post spring rates when discussing ride quality - unless everyone went with the 9F / 7R. Thanks in advance, you will be helping out a future customer.

OT, but why is your "Jumbo" trademarked?

Jumbo™ Oct 26, 2004 10:11 PM

Sorry guys. I'm looking for customer reviews with 7F / 5R for the 4th or 5th Gen.

Puppetmaster - Valid question. PM'd you to keep this thread on-topic.

The special pricing we have been offering to the board memebers was an introductory offer to get the name out to the Maxima community. We have had an overwhelming response from both consumers and dealers. Next week during the SEMA show we will be pushing D2 to many large distributors and will soon start a full internet and magazine advertising campaign. Due to rising manufacturing costs, the cost of advertising and to make pricing fair for our distributors (the introductory price was BELOW wholesale). MSRP on the Maxima application (we now have A31, A32, A33 and A34 available) will be set at $1200. Our selling price will be set at 10% off retail with free shipping ($1080).

We will be closed all next week due to the SEMA show but I will be checking my email, feel free to email me (michael@urbanimport.com) with any questions. Thank you for your support.

XeroX Nov 4, 2004 10:29 AM

Hey that website.

http://www.d2motorsports.com/home.htm

I just looked at it and im in sacramento! roseville is like 35 minutes away hehe..

Is that the actual manufacturer...

UHH...

I just called em and they are D2 MOTORSPORTS...

They do not provide these for sale. However, they are trying to get these in stock. Early next week they are going to contact me with information on ordering these.

I have offered to help them set up another GD thru them on these. So if anyone would be interested in these feel free to contact me as I will be setting up order information for these once they get them in.

Larrio Nov 4, 2004 11:09 AM

raybone97-I30t Nov 5, 2004 09:40 PM

got mine installed today by a shop,, everything went smooth,, did not replace to back orange gasket on the rears,, the old one was torn to hell,, fronts still looked brand new, so he put the fronts back on...anyway,, lowered 2.3 all around, camber -.5, eveything else back to factory spec.....Question for those that have these....i assume the stick with the h--l on it is the dampening setting,,,but is it supposed to actually fit tightly into the top plate or just kind sit in there...and when you turn it, is it supposed to click or anything?,,for now i have them all set at what i assume to be the softest setting (all the way counter-clockwise)....definately stiffer in the front, and the rear kinda floats a bit...is that where you have them or what?.. ....nice ride, mechanic said "these are some of the nicest coilovers he's seen" and showed everyone at the shop..I PAID 900,,, THERE IS A GD FOR 750 NOW!..but its still worth it.. love em so far..

dblrr900 Nov 6, 2004 07:26 AM

Slakibert.....

Did you get rear mounting plates with yours? I received my coilovers but there is no rear mounting plates. I would think I should have these, can you confirm if you received them or not.

Here is the pics to everything I received:
