I own a '01 maxima and i find it very confusing with all these headlights and terms. I want to replace my stock headlights with the ones on custommaxima.com, the ones with black housing. However i heard they are **** and im just wondering if they refer to the bulbs that come with it. Is it possible to purchase that set of headlamps and put in UMNITZA DDE's for the lighting? Are the headlamps with the black housing not the same as 2002-03 stock ones? Any help is appreciated.. i just wanted to clear things up.

 

the ones on custommaxima are NOT the same as the 02-03 ones...they are terrible projoector lights with terrible output. there is even a recent thread with someone seeing another max with them next to his, and he said it was almost like his lights were off it was so bad. maybe those lights combined with HIDs might be decent, but i dont know if anyone ever tried it.

im sure you can use the DDEs with the custommaxima ones, but remember, the DDEs are just that angel eye ring, not actual lighting.

 

Well, first of all, those projector headlights are poorly designed, and give virtually no light. The projector light bulb used is an H3, which is a fog light bulb, not a headlight bulb!! Refer to my thread titled "The worst headlights ever" here on the 5th gen discussions to clear up any questions you may have. If you insist on getting them, then the only way to obtain adequate light output will be to custom fabricate some HID's into it. Can you spell $$$$$. Your best option will be either getting used (usually stolen!!) OEM 02/03 HID's(your worst choice) or getting (the following statement has been repeated ten thousand times by now!!) 02/03 HID's from Performance_Depot, where I got mine. They are awesome, work perfectly,fit perfectly, look great, and cost $598/pair. DO NOT buy stolen/used HID's with "broken mounting tabs".

 

ok that clears things up a bit. so where is it possible to find a good set of projectors for an 01 maxima with black housing? such thing? and correct me if im wrong, so u can get projector headlights and get DDE's which light up the ring? and have HIDS as well?

you cannot get good projectors. all the projectors suck, what turbo is saying is cust mount a set of aftermarket HIDs into the projectors housing, which will cost some cash. there are NO projectors out there that come with HIDs, you have to custom do that. he is right, your best bet is to do what he said, and when opening the headlights to install the DDEs, get the housing painted black...you will NOT be happy with projectors, from anywhere.

 

Yeah, like a said in the other thread, and what everyone else is saying... there are a lot of illumination issues with projectors... and down where I live cops do bust ya for lighting issues...

 

After seeing and driving a Honda S2000 I refuse to believe ALL projectors are bad, that car has the best light output I have ever seen. If someone would produce projectors for out cars that can fit the H4 bulb I would buy them in a second and install my HID's

 

I think people are referring to halogen projectors, I believe they're different optic setup. I mean HID projectors give off great light output, in fact the '04 Maxima has one of the biggest outputs I've seen.

 

I'm not sure if people here meant ALL projectors, I for one meant cheap aftermarket projectors.... guess I shoulda specified...

 

yeah, i also meant aftermarket projectors. those lights on new cars are HID projectors and look amazing. these are cheap ebay ones. unless you retrofit HIDs into them.

for example, my friend has a 6th gen accord with TYC headlights (one of the better brands out there, but still uses an H3 bulb). he spent A LOT of money and got projectors from an Audi A6 and fitted them (with A LOT of fabrication) into the TYC housing, and now his light output is excellent. but that cost a ton of money.

i still think your best bet would be to get the lights that turbo got from performance depot and have them opened up and painted black. that would give you the performance, the black look, and you would be able to do the DDEs at the same time.

 

What do you guys think i should install for high beams? 9005? 80 watt piaa?
