02 Maxima SE - 2 problems.....
2 problems have recently crept up:
1) the tach needle is sticking a little - about every 1000 rpm (it stops for a split second then keeps moving - it is noticable though).
2) there is a weird faint humming noise when releasing the clutch in first gear (from a stand still) - very noticable in traffic since you are stopping and starting all the time.
Also, I'm looking at getting a new set of tires - any comments on the Falken ZE 512s? They are by far the cheapest available around here.
Going to make an apt to have this looked into before my warranty expires....
Anyone know what is going on, or have the same problems?
Thanks!

2) sounds like the infamous "clutch howl" which I also get occasionally in my car. I think it has something to do with the clutch bearing as I recall, but apart from the noise I don't think it does any harm. I've had the cluch howl every once in a while for the last year or so, but it doesn't seem to affect the car performance and I've never bothered with having it looked at....
As to the Falken 512's i'm on my second set. Impressions:
1. Great price
2. Excellent wet traction
3. Good snow traction
4. Good dry traction, though the sidewalls are a little softer than the Potenzas.
5. They are a little noisy, but not excessive.
6. First set I had 225/50/17 (stock size), current set is 235/45/17. I prefer the 225's as I think they give better handling becuase the sidewall is more vertical (resulting in less sidewall flex). the 235s have slightly better traction on launches, though.
7. The way I drive, they're good for 30K miles or so, though since they're so inexpensive, I don't mind having to replace them sooner than, say, Pilot Sport A/S which cost 2x as much...
sounds like the clutch howl
You can tell for certain if it happens when the clutch is hot. Riding the clutch on a small hill should make it happen. If you can get this sound to happen, then Nissan should replace the clutch for free. I would certainly try and get this done. Although no one has reported a long term problem with the clutch howl you just don't know.
Don't know about the tach needle problem.

i have the same problem with my tech. i had the faint ses when i first brought the car. dealer fixed it buy replacing gauge cluster. when i got the car back the tech needle with stick for a sec. i took it back and they replaced the gauge cluster again. problem solved. service advisor told me that some of the gauge clusters had bad springs in the tech needle
i have the same problem with my tach, only when i really push it though. clutch howl as well, just an unsightly noise
gettin it fixed tomorrow though!
