Possibly Blew Master Cylinder

** Racing replaced my strut and did not reinstall the brake hose clip to keep it from rubbing against the strut. The hose rubbed and evuentally got a hole, which resulted in a loss in brake pressure. I'm being told that I damaged my master cylinder because I still attempted to use what little pressure I had in the brakes to drive the car to the dealership. $700 for new line, master cylinder and flush.

So, is it possible to blow the master cylinder by using it with very little pressure/fluid?

umm, not too sure about that... I think you can damage it by flooring the brake pedal, mainly damaging some seals inside.

Really? I am not being a pain here...but flooring your brakes (I.E. Pressing the pedal to the floor) can damage it?

Reason: I have done this several times in the past. Why would pressing the pedal to the floor, a physical design (meaning the pedal can get to the floor) cause damage?

Sounds like if this is possible, you have a serious design flaw.

If you floor your brakes and continually pump them with no brake fluid inside can destroy the seals of you brake master cylinder - like what i did cause i am a dumass. Anyways, $700 is really high! I paid a little over $100 for the Cylinder itself but the hose could be around $50 (the one for the clutch is around $70). Anyways, that leaves around $500 for installing and bleeding. That sounds liek a lot but then again, I don't work at a dealership.

What line is being replaced? The soft line from the "hard" line in the fender well to the caliper itself? If so, this is something ANY person can do easily with a tool purchased at Sears for 10 buxors. THen you have to bleed the brakes as well.

I would do this personally first before commiting to replacing the MC at the tune of 700 clams.....can you say *cough* RIPOFF *cough*

As to the claim running out of "pressure" damages your MC, I can add no validity or deniblity to it.

Good Call

Nice job. I was very hesitant for "you" when they needed to replace the MC because of a line failure. I just could not understant HOW it could make it fail.

Asking for the part is a nice touch. Classy, yet makes a statement.
