1) She obviously has a problem with an engine sensor that has not be properly fixed yet. Take it back to Nissan or find another mechanic to scan the code and fix the problem.
2) A sensor in the automatic climate control system is not working correctly, that might be related to the check engine light problem she's having as well.

you may want to check the seal on your gas cap. if the gas tank cant create a vacuum it will light up the check engine after 2 or 3 starts. the nissan dealer may say they fixed it because they did, they tightened the gas cap and reset the light. also make sure your mom knows to put the gas cap on until it clicks 3 times.
as for the climate control, i would say it is most likely the in cabin temp sensor, which doesnt control the a/c or heat if it is all the way down(60?) or up(90). this sensor is located on the instrument panel behind the steering wheel on the right hand side. im not sure that there is a way to test this sensor, but i am sure your nissan dealer will know.

My 2002 ECU is on all the time. I had the codes checked and its the EVAP Valve near the EVAP canister underneath the car on the driver's side rear tire area. Basically, the valve is stuck some gas fumes are leaking into the atmosphere. THe fumes trigger the sensor which is part of the emissions system. Reportedly this is common with maxima's and the part is about $50 and can be replaced with basic tools at home if you want to save money. Likely this is the problem but check the codes at autozone first.
