Auto Transmission Fluid Leaking for 3rd Time

Alright, is anyone else having this problem. The first leak was May of 2003, fixed under warranty. The second leak cam soon after in October 2003. Nissan fixed it for free again inder the 60k warranty. Now it's November 2004 and once again tranny fluid on the garage floor. What's going on here. My car now has 66k and I doubt that they are going to fix it again for free.

I can pay for this one but don't want to have to replace the gasket every year or less. If this is what I can expect then it's going up for sale.

get under the car a tighten the bolts again. they might be loose... or go and buy all the bolts new. I think Nissan didn't replace the botls...and re-use the old ones.......

It depends on what they did to fix it and if it's leaking from the same place. Whatever they did to your car should be listed on your copy of the repair order.

They replaced the pan gasket only. I don't think that they changed the bolts. I think that I will try the new bolts first and then, if necessary, get a new gasket and put it in myself.

The invoice, both times, read: Inspected and found A/T oil pan gasket defective. Removed and replaced A/T oil pan gasket.

All three times, leaking from the exact same place.

On my way to the parts store. I'll post when job is finished today.

I'm not sure about your 2k but the 2k2 requires replacing the pan bolts after removing the pan because they are self sealing bolts. That could be your problem if one or more of your bolts is not sealing.

Thanks for the info, I'll check to see if the 2k2 andthe 2k share the same tran pan bolts in the morning.

For now I retorqued the bolts @ 10 Ft/Lbs, cleaned up the mess and will wait till the morning to see if anymore fluid is on the garage floor.

all replacement parts come with 12 month 12000mile warranty. check if you are still in the 12000 mile range.

Alright Matt 01SE, I called Nissan and they are going to fix the problem even though I passed the 12k mileage by about 3k and the 12 months by about 26 days. Thanks for the info on the warranty. I was just about to pick up a new gasket from Nissan and do the job myself.

Charlie Kilo, when I get to the dealer I will check to see if the 2k and the 2k2's share the same pan bolts.

I'll post later this afternoon

I'm not sure I would trust this dealer. The problem should've been fixed the first time. I recently dropped the transmission pan and cleaned and flushed it out myself. When I removed the pan, there was no gasket. Apparently a gasket was never put on when my tranny was built. Also, all 21 pan bolts need to be replaced. The bolts have a special sealant on them. It is also possible that the bolts may have been overtorqued. This could strip out the holes for the bolts. The torque required on these bolts is around 6ft-lbs. This is a very low torque.

Alright, the dealer is fixing the leak for free. It's been 13 months and 15k miles. Pretty fair if you ask me.

As far as the torque. I think that they were at 6lbs as when I went to tighten them I thought they were loose and took them to 10ft/lbs. Oops! Well, it shouldn't matter anymore as the dealer is replacing the gasket and hopefully the bolts also. Car will be ready tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone on the Org. who is willing to give their 2 cents. It really helps to get things done right when your armed with all the info.

They even allowed me to bring in my own Royal Purple ATF to replace the fluid that will be drained from the pan.

Alright picked up the car yesterday and it's back in action and running great. While my car was there I had them clean the injectors and the intake system. They also replaced the belts. I could have done it myself but since they fixed the tranny (out of warranty) for free, I decided to give them the belt job. It was $99.00.

Clean your injectors every 15k. You'll feel the difference!
