02 max engine knock!!!

About a week ago, i went to start my car and the car struggled to start so i turn it off and tried again. Well.... it started but was followed by a loud knocking sound coming from the front right cylinder which sounded like a man with a hammer trying to get out. I only have 50K miles but i scared to put in the shop b/c my mods could void my warranty. Has anyone had the problem b4 or have any idea of what it could be? By the way it's a 6speed.

I am having the same problem right now, I think. I took my car into the dealer today and one of the techs took it for a ride and told me he never heard something like that. He said it sounded like a jackhammer 2 blocks away.

My car will be in there tomorrow all day.

It only happens under light-medium acceleration and has gotten worse in the past few days.

i just read a post below saying that the crank sensor needs to be alligned not only with bolts but with a dimple or something. this causes an offset in teh timing and causes knock. just what i read.

I've been dealing with this forever. PLEASE!!!! if anyone finds a cure post it or PM me. I'm desperate to find a fix. I called Nissan Consumer Affairs today to ask them what to do but gave up after being on hold forever.

How loud are your knocks? Mine is really loud, it can be heard inside the car with the windows closed and people outside walking hear it too.

sounds like it could be a timing issue. Does it do it on start up or only under exceleration? Carefull driving it,,, don't want to detonate if it is. Also it could be your timing chain or a push rod. Let me know what the dealership finds out. You would think your SES light would come on or something. Damn little people with hammers...

Nissan doesn't use pushrods in any of their engines, as far as I can remember they never even had a pushrod actuated OHV head design on any of their vehicles- even Datsuns. Sounds like a spun rod bearing or something- which I never heard of on a VQ engine. When you spin a rod bearing it sounds like someone is beating on the engine internally- and it tends to come right from the top of the engine- head. I have spun bearings on SR20s before and it sounds like someone hitting the engine with a hammer inside. Let us know what the dealer finds, I'm currious myself.

I also started having the same problem, but I was using regular gas. I start using BP premium gas yesterday, but I didn't push it because it was raining. BlackBird, also when I brake to a complete stop the RPM jump little up and goes down very fast causing the car jerk foward ( like the tranny down shift). Black bird do know what is causing this problem ( TB, tranny, spin rod bearing )

Also I got a hi idle code (about 990 RPM) last week, but the dealer reprogram back to spec with the consult II. Righ now I'm about 550 RPM for the Idle.

thanks Jeff

Same here! I cant find a tech who has an idea what it is. Also on 3 test drives w/ mechanics the noise didnt happen.

Car is in the dealer as we speak, went in at about 11 am, I told my service advisor about the crank issue, the screws not being the only thing needed adjusted but the dimple as well.

I'll post later after I pick the car up to see what they say.

I just hope it's covered under the 50k powertrain warranty, it should right?

Blackbird -kind of because when I install back the stock intake I took a look in inside the plate.

It just very annoying because you have hold the brake hard or else the car would jump foward.

all right,
Jeff

The dealer told me the car was low on oil. My service advisor is a pretty cool guy and knows they're the only ones who touch my car so on the receipt he put 35699 instead of 37180 miles so that in case something stems from the car being low on oil, it will be covered under warranty. The car was low 2 quarts.

What's funny is when I went there the first time, I told them that the oil light blinks everytime I turn on the car and they heard the noise and they refused to check the oil simply for my state of mind.

Service advisor was cool enough to order me a new Bose HU without even reproducing the problem, and also a new climate control unit because a couple of the lights went off on mine.

So, all said and done, I would reccomend you guys to check your oils. I picked up the car and the noise is gone indeed.

How did such a new car get half a gallon low on oil? Do you have any leaks or oil burning issues?

So I take it your getting a new engine ? You most likely spun some rod bearings like I said. Plus who in their mind doesn't check their oil ? I usually use the 2nd trip meter just to know when 3K miles is around the corner to change it. I don't use no oil change reminder stickers like some people do. I got 100K miles and my car don't burn any oil, I don't even check it !

I know what you mean about not checking your oil and not burning any. I had 100K miles on my 92 SE before I traded it and it never used any oil between changes. I would only check it right before I changed it and right after. It was always on the full mark.

hmmm... I just changed my oil. I was using 5w30 synthetic but i just switched back to 10w30synthetic for the winter. But everytime i changed my oil it always looked alittle low to me. But i have know leaks! Where you getting the knock from one cylinder or all cylinders. I going to check my oil tomorrow just to see what happens.
Guzo: when you got your car back did it still have a knock?
Blackbird: Could throttle body cleaner cause a engine knock? B/C i cleaned my throttle body the same day i changed my oil. But didn't get the knock until a week later!

There is no need to switch oil weights just for the winter. Our cars are designed to use 5W30 for all seasons for maximum fuel economy. Besides that, 5W30 would be better suited for the winter versus 10W30 anyway.
