2k3 6speed/HLSD problem -Help!
Guys,
Since about 8 months ago, i had this weird problem where when i turn the steering wheel nearly 90-100% of the way, i would get a groaning noise (like rubbing of the tire) while accelerating.
Took it the dealer, NO PROBLEMS FOUND. THen finally they found the problem and told me because my car is lowered, and what not, it may not be covered. So i continued to drive it around.
Now yesterday, i went for a good drive and now its any turn more than 30% or greater and accelerating in 1st or 2nd i get not only a groaning noise but also a thunk as well.. This is making me truely nervous.
Does any of you guys know what this is? Is it my tranny? my HLSD? or strut mounts?
I am riding on H&R springs since DAY 1 and i change my tranny fluid every 30K with Amsoil S2000.
Thanks

you know, I have a similar if not the same problem... but I don't associate it with my VLSD. I had it with my agx/sprint combo and now also with my d2 coilovers.
it happens about 90-100% steering wheel turn. Usually only backing up out of driveways or in parking lots at low speeds. It a god awful grinding/groaning sound, almost mechanical or some physical parts hitting each other.
I've factored out the usual things such as wheel bearings since the car is silent all other times. In your case with conventional suspension setup, it could be your strut bearings or associated with the strut mounts on the car

i think i got the same problem with my maxima. for me, when i turn the wheel right and give it gas, it sounds like something is grinding but this only happens when i give it gas. now when i turn right and dont give it gas, there is no sound at all. and this only happens when i turn right. i know it is not my sterring rack casue that has been replaced with a new one. any other ideas guys?

it is so freaking annoying turning right and hearing that noise. any clue what it can be? i am on H&R with stock struts. This problem only occured after I got a alligment done. Before the alligment, everything was normal on the car. I have no clue what it is. can it be something with my axle? maybe not because it drives normal when it is straight. maybe something inside the tranny? car shifts fine and drives normal. brakes? car breaks fine when i turn and when i brake in a staright line. this is getting me pissed off. lol

yea, its annoying as hell but no two situations occur the same for relatively the same problem.
another thing that was mentioned is the little stubs at the back of the hubs that hit the control arm (to prevent over turning the wheel). If those things lose the little plastic cover they could make noise. However sometimes my noise happens when the wheel is not fully turned, so I can't really say

Lube your wheel stops and check the lower control arm cup portion when it meets the steering stop on your spindle, more than likely that is your problem.
If you have AGXs on your car, and you ARE NOT using 4th gen strut mounts, and you ground down your 5th gen strut mounts, you may have not grinded it evenly and will cause a metal to metal thunk noise.
Check lower control arms by rear bushing or by front.
I know about the 2k1-2k2 Lower control arm recall, but I have seen 2 2k3s with bad bushings in lower control arms from lowering and how aggressive you drive.
Doubt a CV joint would make noise at 1 turn of wheel, at 2 turns and accel, yes it might be.
Good luck.

I've pretty much checked everything, and went at repleacing the wheel bearings- thinking it will get rid of the clunking and whining noise- nope clunk is still there and the whinne noise is from my phucked up tires that are not wearing evenly- Dunlop SP9000s just suck and so do bent wheels . Its all in the strut bearing, once I lube them- ez to do on my GC/Koni setup, it goes away for a while. It sounds terrible with a passenger in the front seat, turning just LEFT. Car feels tight, and the bushings all look good. Gonna get some JIC with new wheels n tires on the car very soon, should get rid of my noises. Wheels n tires are going on this week.

What concerns me is that accel (light accel too) at anything more than one turn of the wheel is causing noise. And this noise, is a GROANING NOISE.. If i turn even more, then i get grinding and clunking.
Nissan siad its my transmission. And that they require a tear down, and if they find signs that my modification was to blame, the tear down plus the work will not be covered.
What i am even more concerend about is will this cause a bigger probleM/??
