Which OEM muffler? Or aftermarket?

I have a 2002 MAxima SE with a y-pipe and catback. I want to replace my current muffler because I got it from warpspeed and it is beginning to rust and get louder. Which muffler would be right for my setup and what ae the specs? Seems like there is a different muffler for 5thgen Vs 5.5Gen Vs 6th Gen, etc. I am not concerned about the tip because I will probably replace it with one I like anyways...

Thanks,

Mark

BTW: There is a 2001 GXE muffler I may purchase but I am not sure if that is the one I want. I prefer to buy an aftermarket SS one as long as it is QUIET.

If you want a quiet aftermarket muffler then a Cattman or Frankencar is the way to go.

the only thing is I have heard horror stories about their customer service and speed of shipping. Some people have been waiting forever for their products

if your willing to wait , you should get frankencar, the car sounds like a 350z with the full catback, its awsome, not loud at ALL !

I was actually about to post whether I should buy a G35 coupe muffler because those cars sound awesome. Not loud but you know they are well refined.

I was wondering if the G35 coupe muffler would fit our cars? The G35 sedan muffler is too quiet. I'm still most likely getting the Cattman full exhaust with Y-pipe, and call it a day.

I'm thinking you could use the 350Z/G35C mufflers, just not mounted in the same way, meaning you can't position the muffler so that there are two tips on each side of the car for that dual exhaust effect. You might be able to mount the muffler in the same fashion as the OEM Maxima muffler. Most mufflers IIRC can flow either way, so you can use whatever side you choose. Just use the end (Muffler) with one pipe as the inlet, and the other end with two pipes sticking out of the muffler as the outlet. Im sure you'll get that 350Z/G35C sound because well, its their muffler.

Just get OEM. It's not noisy and annoying like aftermarkets.

so would a 5th gen, not 5.5gen, GXE muffler work on a 2002 (5.5 gen) maxima? I am figuring they changed the muffler along with the new engine?

The Muffler is the same in I30/I35's and Maxima 5/5.5 gen.

The 5/5.5 gen Maxima muffler is supposed to be "variable capacity," meaning that it's quiet at lower RPM, but it opens up a less restrictive route for the exhaust gas at higher RPM. Has anybody tested this? I know a lot of you like the OEM muffler even if the rest of the exhaust is aftermarket. Does it actually get less restrictive at high RPM?

As far as I understand it opens completely, or almost, under higher RPMS. It has a flap and when a certain amount of pressure hits it, bam it opens and spits out gasses. Sounds kinda dirty huh?

Yeah, that sounds dirty. Lol. Does anybody have dyno numbers comparing an aftermarket exhaust system with stock muffler compared to an aftermarket exhauset system with an aftermarket muffler?

For N/A applications, you are lucky if you get +1hp

I agree with that. There isn't a muffler out there that will flow better than the maxima OEM muffler, same with the cat. The differences would be so small it is debatable.

I have no problem using the OEM cat and muffler. If they work, I will definitely keep them in my exhaust setup. I was just asking if anybody felt that aftermarket would be better. Thanks for the input, guys! You're not the first ones to say that the OEM muffler is great, and I'm sure you won't be the last. I think OEM is what I'll go with.

After market mufflers do not affect hp unless you are FI and running a decent amount of boost. so really you wind up paying a couple of hundred dollars to make your max sound like **** (unless you get the cattman or frankencar).
