got new tires...weird sound...please help

The tire section never responds to anything so to hell with posting there. I bought some 235/45r17 Cooper zeon all season tires today. Had them installed and they rode beautifully...

however I notice as im slowing down the car seems to vibrate a bit...pedals and all. Now my first instinct was to bring the car back and have them balance it properly this time which seemed to eliminate the pedals vibrating etc etc. But it still seems to have this weird vibration that you can feel when you are driving now. Is it because of the tread being a bit rougher or the tire being a harder compound?

I am concerned with the fact that maybe because its now 45 for thickness that my tires are not perfectly flat on the ground (seeing as suspension with 225/50r17s would and should make my tires a perfect flatness on the ground when the car is just cruising along)

I think the word im looking for is that it may be off camber seeing that the tires are 10mm in total less diameter.

thanks

-Mike

You haven't changed the vehicle height by changing the suspension so alignment shouldn't be an issue. If the only thing you have changed are tires and if you didn't have vibration before then it's gotta be wheel balance. You are bound to have a difference in road feel and sound with these new tires as well and your speedo will be reading fast. Take the car back to the tire joint, explain the problem and ask for a rebalance of all 4 wheels.

i did bring it back to the tire center...had them rebalance them right in front of me...(i used to work in a shop a while back so I know how to rebalance and which machine does what etc etc.)..

still seems to vibrate when I drive which really pisses me off...and im talking in and out of gear so its not like my clutch is just making the motor rev down or anything. seeing that I lost 10mm overall tire thickness wouldnt that have changed the height resulting in part of the tire on the ground vs. being flat on the ground?

no the tire is almost the same overall profile, i have had 235/45/17 on my car for two years now and i have never had a prob with them, go to a shop that has a "Road Force" balancing machine that can tell if the tire is out of round or your rim.... the only time i had a vibration issue was when i needed to have the two back hubs replaced because of the wheel bearings

I've got 225/45/17s on my 5.5 gen, and they are doing great. I've had them for a year with no problem. It's got to be the tire balancing, not the size.

jus take a bunch of Skippy peanut butter (make sure its the CRUNCHY type cause thats the best) and jus rub it all over the tires and wait 3 and a half hours then jus rinse n they will sound just dandy

what type of place would have the special alignment center? Sears or something? Its really pissing me off. And it came stock with 225/50r17s...i put 235/45r17s on there which is approx 10mm less height. It really feels like its just riding on the edge of the tire when im driving...tires have amazing grip but this is just driving me nuts.

thanks

we could beat this topic to death... your tire size is FINE as a matter of fact my Nissan dealer and other tire compies recomended 235/45/17 for the nokians i had on my car before, because nokian does not make them in 225/50/17... i decided to keep 235/45/17 on the car because it looks better and i think it performs better. MY OPINION you need to give the place you got your tires hell and demand something be done... and get the car on a Road Force machine.

Just get it balanced on a "road-force" system. This way you will know if it is an issue with balancing or a specific tire(s).

I've got 235/45/17 on my 2k and my car rides fine. It's not the size that's the problem.

To me it sounds at like at least one of the tires is defective. It could be a belt issue, something the normal tire balancing procedure won't neccessarily pick up.

I would ask the shop to swap your tires for a new set of the same size and see if that makes a difference. See if you can get a different brand too.

swap the fronts to the back ... seee i the vibration persists ... at least you'll be able to tell if its one of the tires from the front. does yout steering wheel shake when u slow down? and is it only when u are slowing down or when accelerating too?
too many variables at play..

Another good thread being ruined by "tire experts" -- if I want someone to tell me I'm a "loser" just because I don't agree with them I'll go to OT. 235/45/17 on stock rims has been used by quite a few .org members including myself with zero problems, at high speed, in hard cornering, at the track, whatever. But anyway, not to beat a dead horse...

Agree w/above poster about road force balancer. If not use a static balance with stick weights on the centerline. The stick weights suck but on the stock 17s theres no provision for clamp weights on the front. Still got vibration after everything zeroes, could be a bad tire, a bent hub, or a bent rim. It's also entirely possible you have other suspension issues (struts, etc) that had previous problems now exacerbated by the new (harder compound) tires.

BTW, some vibration is inherent with these stock wheels, mine have been balanced, rebalanced and balanced again and I stil have a bit of vibration. It's done this since day one.

Yes I have the narrow stock wheels, and I chose my tire size. 225/45s are the same width as 225/50s. They have a 5% shorter sidewall and that is the only difference, except for having more than 3 different kinds of tires to choose from and having better feel in hard cornering, so I guess I'm the loser. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
