Brake Question

ok basically my rear brakes started making a weird noise the other day so i decided so order brembo crossdrilled slotted with axxis pads, to do it right, but the noise on the brakes got really bad and was happening while i was driving so i took it into pep boys and told them. the guy checked it out for free cuz he thought i was going to get it serviced there. He said that the pad was completely gone, that if i drove on it any more the rotor was going to go bad. So i acted naive and told him that i could do it but next week when i get the money, he insisted that it would cause my caliber to go bad if i did that because all that is left is the metal on the pad,he showed me it compared to a regular pad and it had lik half of inch of i guess just metal? I could care less about the rotor or pads on there currently, but i am worried about the caliper. So the question is, is it true, will i really harm my caliper, or was that just something he was saying? Any help here please

Thanks
Brandon

If the pads are too worn you can damage the caliper... the question is, how worn are the pads? You might be able to make it a week, you might ruin them if you brake extremely hard tomorrow... there's no way we can tell for sure, but when is "the other day"? If the other day means yesterday then you'll probably be ok until next week...if it means 5 or 6 days ago.... who knows.

You mean the thickness of a penny? I'm no mechanic but I have had pads that thin before and waited a week....... how many miles do you drive a day?

EGADS!!!!!!!! The pads worned down? Well, you better get it done otherwise you'll be driving with no brakes, yet even damage the brake componets. Calipers are not cheap, they usually about 150 a pop.

DONT GO TO PEP BOYS. They hire young and stupid mechanics, and give you lousy parts. They've screwed up 3 things already.

If you saw the pads, and they dont look like silver on the inside, then your okay. There is a squeeler that sounds when the pads are getting worn. Just a safety feature. I'd change them soon though.

If you are really going to let Pepboys do it, get them to use the Raybestos Ceramics, and have them clean and regrease the caliper pins. I personally would change them myself, and it's fairly easy. Just read up about it.

Since your on Staten Island, go to the Shell Gas Station on Tysens and Hylan Blvd. They never screwed up a job for me, and their prices are good. They were so good, they opened up another shop. Their other shop is on Hyland Blvd across from the ShopRite super market.

PS-I dont work for them. I lived in SI, NY for a while.

Oh, there is a bigger part and a smaller part because your caliper pins are sticking. When your pins stick, one part of the pad stays in contact with the rotor.

Solution, the pins need to be cleaned and regreased. It will extend your life of pads, so they wear evenly.

what noise are they making? is it a nails on chaulkboard sound? if it is, it is the wear sensor and yeah you have another week... i drove on mine for three weeks before i could change mine and no prob... just brake early and light, that way the rears are used the least amount possible...

Wishful thinking. I just had a rear caliper replaced and it set me back a little less than that aftermarket. Imagine how much OEM costs...
