Strut Problems

I just replaced my 2000 SE 5sp. stock front struts w/ KYB GR2 units.
First issue was the KYB replacement mounts did not match stock by missing a small shaft on the bottom. When installed, they knocked all to heck obviously incorrect for the application.
They installed the GR2 with the old mounts and it seems to fit appropriatly and to function fine, but now there is tons of popping and squeeking noise when you turn the steering wheel? What the heck?
I assisted the entier process, and I cant see what would have changed to make that kind of noise. Neither can the shop who did it.
Anybody know whats going wrong?

popping noise is probably an incorrectly installed bearing, it's a piece of plastic that fits between the top of the strut and the strut mount.

Make sure the upper spring perch is facing the right way as well. The word OUT is stamped on top of the perch and must face out or be in line with the lower strut mounting flange.
