Question About Y-pipe

could you get an aftermarket y-pipe and not replace the stock exhaust?? would it make noise??? i was just curious. not gonna upgrade anytime soon since its winter...

ChromeSE5 12-28-2004 07:27 AM

thats what i did, has a nice little rumble to it to. you'll notice a lot more pull esp in third gear

kcowden 12-28-2004 07:29 AM

Even with the b-pipe it's still not to loud. I'd get the b-pipe too.

Sammzway 12-28-2004 07:42 AM

I'm gonna do the same setup as well. Get a Y pipe, and keep stock Bpipe and muffler. I'm planning on getting the Stillen Y pipe. So far haven't heard any fitment issues with the stillen Ypipe. Unlike budget or cattman. Although Cattman i heard is real good. Plus my cat is leaking and i keep getting the nasty egg smell in my cabin when i floor it. :(

What kcowden said. If you keep the stock muffler, it won't be loud, but you can hear a little rumble (nice). BTW, I have had no problems with Cattman.

So there was no fitment issues? Any weird noise? Was it just plug and play? I just don't wanna keep taking days off from work to run to the shop to modify to perfection over and over.. lol. I'm deciding over cattman vs stillen.. so confusing. :ugh:

BRAN808 12-28-2004 09:11 AM

Mostly every one here on the org recommends the Cattman. They say better performance gains and great quality, customer service, and fitment. Although I can't say from experience.............still stock.

My Cattman Ypipe broke its flex pipe 4 times, I'm on my 2nd Ypipe from them, it also cracked in the Y part of the pipe, where the 2 cylinder heads merge togheter. Its on now temporarilly while I wait for something bigger, I absolutely hate my Ypipe. One time the hanger broke off the Ypipe and put a big azz hole in the Ypipe. I dunno I got one of the 1st Cali Spec ones but geeez I think I coulda made a Ypipe that lasted longer than this one myself !

WOW!!.. stories like this one scares the crap outta me. Thank you for the run down, makes me think twice about cattman.

I do have a set of Cattman headers for my car to be installed, just waiting around cause I have a turbo kit in the works, dunno if I wanna put them on again, and take them off when I am ready to put the turbo piping on.

When you buy the cattman headers, does the package also include the Ypipe?

I don't even see the headers on cattman site.. where'd u get urs?

BlackBIRDVQ 12-28-2004 10:47 AM

I got mine used on Ebay :) Yes all header packages for Maximas- other than the cheap OBX crap on Ebay, all come with Yipes. They are special HEADER ONLY Ypipes which will not work on your car without the headers, nor will the headers work with a normal Ypipe designed to work with factory exhaust manifolds (headers).

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. nowwww i get it. Nice. Let us know if u run into any fitment or tech issues. :) Thanks dude.

BTW- I called Cattman, they gave me a price quote of $825 for the headers.

i have heard a lot of good things about the cattman y pipe and am trying to save up money for one. i was wondering wat kind of gains u get with the b pipe.

Larrio 12-28-2004 12:46 PM

i have the stillen y-pipe with stock exhaust which still enabled me to put down 200hp/200tq the last time I dyno'ed

How does it sound? Any difference from stock sound?

2k1seae 12-28-2004 02:10 PM

I think that the newer Cattman Y-Pipes are made better than earlier ones and have a stronger flex section. You could contact Cattman and ask. They are good to talk to. MIne has been on for about 5 - 6 months. It bolted up nicely. After my first runs, I had to adjust the B-Pipe in the hangers because of slight rattle. I think the torque from the launches moved it slightly. I feel more power in mid range, but only gained about a tenth in the 1/4. I'll try again this spring/summer, but I am very satisfied with the setup.

Larrio 12-28-2004 02:52 PM

I like the sound, just the right resonance levels at WOT.

2kVQboodah 12-28-2004 09:20 PM

is your car loud larrio???

maximo-SE 12-29-2004 07:06 AM

what i like to know is how the car sound with frankencar intake and aftermarket y-pipe installed. I am tired of spending money on the lights and looks of the car... i need some power now.. :)

2k1seae 12-29-2004 08:27 AM

I have the Frankencar intake, Cattman Y-Pipe and B-Pipe with a OEM muffler. You can see my previous post, but sound is not too loud (low growl/rumble) at normal throttle but noticable at WOT. I feel some extra power in mid range.

maximo-SE 12-29-2004 08:39 AM

thanks, most likely im going to go with cattman over warspeed.. even though I had so many chances to buy a warspeed for 100 bucks. I think cattman is tha way to go. I hope puppetmaster dont see me post this... hes going to say "wtf u havent bought a ypipe yet!?" LoL :)

no its not. The noise is hard to describe. But my setup really accentuates the scream of the VQ rather than being drowned out by intake and exhaust noises. I should try to get up my vid of the de-k at 7100 rpm

Maxi113 12-29-2004 02:25 PM

I have a Stillen Y pipe it was free and it works just fine, nothing wrong with it and the sound isn't farty or ricey either..It's all the same, just the name...Btw I have a Greddy Evo Exhaust system and it's loud in the winter..But low growling angry loud heh..

Gsilk 12-29-2004 10:19 PM

what are the fitting issues with the budget y-pipe? i cant justify spending hundreds more for $tillen if i'm paying for a name.
