Question about replacing 2003 SE taillights

I have a 2003 Maxima SE and have decided to replace the taillights with the smoked grey 2000-2001 taillights. Before I disassemble the taillight area I have the following question. I read the following post (thanks by the way, really good instructions)

http://www.kevinfisher.net/web_serve...light-mod.html

but it describes having to use a sealant around the lens, when I search for this part# it returns a gasket description. Do the 2002/2003's use a gasket instead? I've also read conflicting reports on if the wiring harnesses are compatible or not.

Has anyone done this mod before?

Thanks!

i did it and didnt use any sealant, and i was and still am ok, no leaking. i just reused the sealant that was left on the car. as for the wiring harness...well, ive heard conflicting things too. i know mine required a different harness, i checked. i dont know about yours, but unfortunately, theres only one way to find out.

The sealant can be gotten from an auto parts store. It's the same thing that's used to seal the windshield. I don't remember what it's called, though.

You will need the harness that is made for the 2k/2k1 tail lights. If you have this, it will plug into the wiring in your 2k3.

I had some leaking problems (my spare tire well 1/2 full of h2o) after switching to the 00 SE tails. Extra sealant will not hurt, only help. Also, my lights didn't require a diff. harness. Just PnP!

Thanks for this info. I'm getting ready to swap from 2000SE to 2002SE, sounds like all I need is some additional black windsheild sealant and warm weather.

One quick question, should I just buy some new oem black stud clips and trash the present ones in the process of moving trunk liner out of the way? Notice the 2002 has eyelets, cargo net attachments type.

Got a call in to U-Haul to confirm their brand trailer hitch will transfer from the 2000 to the 2002, crawled under there, looks pretty much the same. Also looked rusty and nasty, think I'll let them drop it. Then I'll blast it, prime and rustoleum it and put in on the gold one. Hope it does because I originally had it on my white 97 SE so it's like a frickin heirloom or something now.

Black Yamaha VX Cruiser looked good hooked up to the white SE.

stick with the 00-01s. just lay a bead of silicon sealant on the edge of the hole that the lights will seat into. and make sure you DONT crank them in too tight. i screwed my aftermarkets in a little too tight on one side and they spider cracked a little on the edges, now theres a small condensation fog at the bottom of the light constantly.
