6 speed bushings, any tips?
6 speed bushings, any tips?
Hey guys,
I have my car back now, and i am trying to figure out how to install the ES bushings. I have most of my console apart, Just wondering where these different rings go. Would anyone with patience, a digital camera, and some know how here give me a few tips? I noticed where a few of them go on the horizontal and vertical pivots, but im sort of confused where the bigger ones go?
Also, not to sure which bushings are to replace the 2 thin yet pretty wide bushings that go in the up and down pivot place sorrounding the part that "grabs". Does this make sense? Probablly not.
Help.
Thanks, marc.

ok i got the bigger piece out, and figure out where the one i was just describign goes. It's the piece that inserts into the ring the pivot holds (Up and Down pivot).
Here's a question: The stock one has a metal cylinder inserted into it, to insert over the shaft that pulls or forces foward. The energy bushing comes with no metal piece, y et seems firm enough not to need a metal piece. Does this piece im talking about have to have the metal in the old bushing pushed in somehow? The polyurethane doesnt seem very flexible, and i dont know how this is possible. Please any help?

I am doing this mod. I looked at the locations for the new bushings. The bushing that goes on the rod inside the engine compartment seems likeit will add value. Same for the large bushing attached to the rod and shifter. What abouth the other four though? What value do they add? Have you heard of any good/bad/indifferent reviews of these bushing kits?
I did the bushing in the engine compartment. It was a little tricky. I used white lithium grease and popped it out by hand. I had someone help me put the new bushing in. We used a set of plyers on one side and another set on the other side of the ring (left/right sides - not front back). If you're doing it by yourself then try pushing one side in, holding it in with plyers then using another set of plyers to wedge the other side in. Its a little frustrating but it went in eventually. Make sure you have plenty of light. I dropped the bushing a couple times and it can be tough to find with little light, if it doesn't fall through to the ground. Please post when you complete the project and letb us know how it went and what you think of the results. I'll do the same. Maybe we can be friends...

I just couldn't get that bushing in (the one you were talkinga bout on the shifter cable). I was trying and almost had it in at one point but its so uncomfortable holding your hand there, that after awhile my hand was killing me from all the pressing.
I'll give it another shot in a few days, but damn that sucked. I tried for about an hour then gave up : /

it's hard and not cause it's complicated, but because it's so hard to push them in. yes, you need some grease. as far as the other 4, they go in the corners of the shifter base. took me awhile too, but it got done.
Just finished with the project, the shifts are very sturdy and rigid now, a dramatic difference over the stock bushings. I am quite satisfied with these replacements.
As for advice, an extra set of hands will help with inserting the new bushings into the rod rings. To insert the bushing, force one end into the ring and have somebody else clamp the opposite 'exposed' end down with plyers. Removal of the airbox will be necessary to gain access to the rod in the engine bay.
Thanks to PoLo and Brian @ Cattman for words of advice.
