Gas Mileage Question

My last tank, I got 17.6 MPG, about 90-95% of that was city driving. I have only owned my Max since the end of November and I have never got more than 21 MPG. I don't drive the car hard and have been driving with a light foot.

Is this normal? It's been pretty cold here, but I have not been spending time letting the car idle to warm up. New air filter placed when I bought the vehicle. I run 92 Octane gasoline. Car only has 36,000 miles. Tires are properly inflated. Anything I could be missing (sensors maybe)? I just think it is odd that my car gets the same MPG as my wife's Toyota 4Runner. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Slushbox or 6spd? I consistently get 24-26 with an even mixture of city/highway and granny/spirited driving. Strange thing is I run 87 octane and never get any pinging or knocking. Try changing gas just for the hell of it. I'm probably gonna get mega flamed on for running 87 octane, but have always been told (from several mechanics) to run the lowest octane fuel you can as long as it doesn't ping or knock.

When I first got it, I was doing a lot of highway driving, and got bout 26 MPG when I took it easy and only went bout 60-65. But recently I've been doing mostly city driving, stop and go, and slight highway and get around 19 or so. Hope this helps.

I used to get better than 25 mpg.. my wife drives like Mrs Daisy...

recently Gas milage dropped substantially to under 20mpg, then soon after pulled code for coils. At this time i Replaced the coils and the gas milage improved to 24mpg.. I am waiting for my MAF to go next.

Ever since i got my car last march i have never been above 19 mpg...even when i took a 300 mile all highway trip. I think that once i get off the highway and drive a little it brings down the mpg substantially b/c how could i not get above 20mpg on a 300 mile trip going 60-70mph? Anyways no check engine light on, properly inflated tires, clean filter, new plugs. Dealer told me PCV Valve issue...who knows...and i always use chevron 93 octane

I have the automatic. Car is all stock at this time. I just find it amazing the wide range of gas mileage people get from the same car.

I get 26-30 mpg on highway and 18-21 in the city. It all depends on how I drive at
the time. Sometimes I have a lead foot other times I drive like a grandpa. Hopefully
this'll help

Gas Mileage

My 03 Maxima get about 15-18 when its 0 degrees here in alaska, 18-21 when its about 70 degrees (here in 3 months or so), and about 25-27 on the highway in the summer time. I use 89-90 octane and no more cus there is no reason too if the car is no knocking or pinging. The higher the octane the more performance of course but most of us arne't street Racers either. I ran 87-89 octane in my Ford Taurus SHO for 10 years before I sold it and never had a problem and the owners manual said to USE 91 "RECOMMENDED". Hope the info helps.

Have you changed to synthetic fluid such as Redline, AMSOIL, or Mobil 1?

Are you getting you mileage readings from the trip computer, or figuring it out manually? The trip computer is not accurate and always gives a few mpg more than is the truth. I run 87 octane in the winter because its cold and I can't come close to using the power on slick streets.

since i have a 2k i have to manually do it and since march i have always gotten between 15.6 mpg-19.1 mpg. And i have driven the car for an entire tank like a grandma with the a/c off and it was only at 18mpg with mix of city/highway and i always use 93 octane. so what's up with this issue?...just got coil code pulled today for 1st time...will replacing all 6 coils help? and i had my plugs changed for plat NGK at 63k and i have 71k now.

In NYC i usually get between 14-17mpg. I recently went to PA and got 23mpg there because the city driving here is nothing. City driving really kills you mpg's especially a city like NYC.

Dallas obviously is no comparison to NYC in city driving. i drive at least 150 a week on the highway at speeds between 60-80mph. I mostly do 60 but i have to usually bring it up to 80 to pass people. I have replaced everything yet so far except coils which im gonna do soon and a fuel filter... could the fuel filter be drastically lowering my mpg since the previous owner had it for 4 1/2 years and i dont know if they used premium.

The coils should help but damn that is horrible mileage. I have a 2000SE also and with about 70% highway and 30% city, and more spirited than grandpa driving, I never get less than 20 mpg. Last month I made it up to TN from florida on a single tank (415 miles).

yeah it sucks to bring home the credit card receipt for $35 every 6 days for gas to the parentals. you are getting higher mpg b/c of the manual since the auto is rated at fewer mpg than manual but there has got to be something wrong with my car and b4 the coil(s) went out last night everything always seemed fine and i did regular maintenance. i never get more than 300 miles on the tank when doing 50/50 city highway driving. and the a/c hasnt been on for 2 months now. if things were fine id be getting like 22-24mpg.

I guess if I had replaced B2 O2 Sensors and a new MAF, I could get back my power and MPG. FYI, @65K I replaced all my coils and plugs and have gained 4 MPG since then and it stands @ a handsome 24 MPG.

Bad Coils - Poor MPG but no Codes?

My '03 SE 6-speed can get about 28 mpg on a long cruise at about 70 mph (measured mpg, not trip computer mpg), one or two mpg less in cold or wet winter weather.

My girlfriend loved my car and bought an '02 GLE (auto of course). Both her and I thought with the auto she'd get a couple less mpg. Unfortunately, she ends up with about 20-22 max driving about the same as my SE.

We've been trying to figure it out for a year. Even put in Mobil 1 for the last oil change to see if that would gain her 1-2 mpg (It seemed to on my Miata from about 28-29 to 32 mpg). No such luck. No noticeable difference.

I've seen a couple mentions of the coils. Could they be going bad enough to affect gas mileage without triggering a code? I've checked for codes. At one point she did have one related to the evaporative system, loose cap, which I cleared. But no other codes in the system.
