The Official Annoying Rattles Thread!

Alright, I've gotten really tired of the rattles I hear around my car all the time when the radio is off or when I hit a bumpy road or something. So I've decided that it's time to start a new thread here. If you've had a rattle, anywhere in the car, and you've found a solution, please post about it here. That way we can all fix all of our rattles in our cars.

I'll start...I haven't found any of the problems yet, and hence no solutions...

some ppl with 5.5s experiance some loud noises under the right side dash, its the blower motor, it sounds like a cell phone on vibrate mode under the dash I basically spent some time today taking it apart and inspecting it. I opened it up and put some lubrication in the motor. Noise has stopped. hopefully this isn't jsut a bandaid fix. we'll see.

I know of two biggies. If you remove your center console, there are two wire connectors (one on the passenger toward the rear and one on the drive side next to the shifter). Mine had made their way down next to the inside of the center console. Made a loud tapping noise any time there was a vibration or bump.

I put some foam around them and taped it up. Noise is gone.

While I was in there, I noticed a clear plastic tab over top of a connector. It is there to protect a plug, but could have been vibrating against the wires or the inside housing of the console. I put some felt tabs on both sides.

Also, I have a metalic jingling noise somewhere on the driver side dash or door. Only occurs on washboard surfaces. It's not the keys.

I think i've got them all. Rear deck, pass dashboard, sunroof, console. I put a couple battery terminal washer between the trunk rod bracket and the deck, the dealer injected foam into the pass side dash where it meets the a-pillar, and the console I put new rubber bumpers on the lid, and tightened the snot out of the screws, so far so good 20k later. The sunroof i haven't touched. I am debating bringing it to the dealer at a later date for that, plus the cable chain that actuates it makes a little noise when I tilt it. Haven't figured that one out yet.

Anyone has clancking/rattling noise in the clock area? It happenes intermittenly - meaning it would stop if I don't drive for a day, and then once you hit a descent bump, it would start again. Its a bit high pitched clancking.. sounds like a loose wrench in the tool box.
Thanks

I've got a squeak coming from under the hood, it's either my hood latch or my horn mounts...it starts when I hit a good bump but after the first time, every vibration makes it squeak, also when the passenger door is closed hard. It doesn't happen when the hood is open and it happens more often in cold weather. I managed to tighten the nuts and bolts around the latch and mounts and it helps but I also sprayed a litttle white lithium grease on the pieces where they may be rubbing together and that seems to work the best.

Ya I had that one. I have no idea how to even take the clock out. You can pull the middle vents but you really can't get to that area easily.

I had a similar noise and discovered it was the hood release latch spring where you pull the latch to open the hood. The spring would vibrate on small bumps on the road. I haven't figured out a permanent fix for this other than replacing the spring. I don't know how to tighten it either so I put in a piece of rubber (like one of those pink pearl erasers you had in school) wedged on the hood release latch. I can't see it down there anyway so I don't mind. The noise is gone so I'm happy

2000 I30:
Rear Deck.......rolled up old towels to the size of baseballs and stuffed then under the deck.

Passenger side of dash.......New this winter. Found that the screw (below the glove box )that mounts/supports the dash into the fire-wall was loose.

Passenger side of A-pillar........Placed black weather stripping between the dash and the A-pillar

Rear sunshade......Just shoot WD-40 down into the sunshade mechanism.

Glove box door......Place weather stripping on the points of contact when it is closed.

Just basic foam black stuff like this:
http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=prod...244-1410-R534H

Then cut to size needed and stuff between what you think is rubbing and making the noise

I agree. I dont know if the rattles are there BECAUSE of the loud stereo, or they would have been there naturally. JUST CRANK IT!

Squeeking coming from the hood when going over small bumps at low speed, or at least that is the only time I heard it. Just put some 3 in 1 oil on the hood latch to lubricate.

I have one on my cigarette lighter / 12V outlet. I temporarily solved it by tightening it; turning the unit clockwise. It came back after a month but I have quitened it a lot by filling the outlet cover with paper towel since tightening it isn't an option. It still comes back but isn't nearly as bad as it was.

i think i remember seeing it in a TSB somewhere. you wrap a flat head screwdriver in a tower and pry the clock up from the left side. don't quote me on that though.

i have/had the following noises

1. rattle coming behind the the left edge of the glovebox
2. rear dash rattle -- fixed but not 100%
3. hood release latch spring vibrate -- fixed by playing around with the spring
4. rattle from the area around where the ash tray is
5. oscillating metal noise coming from the pillar where the driver seat belt it mounted (does anyone know how to remove the cover for that thing? i'd like to take a look at it)

there are others but i can't remember them off the top of my head. those of you guys that fixed your rattles can you post a quick how to that describes how you did it.

it's also very nice to know i'm not the only one who goes mad when i hear something rattle in my car

I was going 60-65 the other day and I noticed the car was shaking. I felt it in the steering wheel and I also felt it. Has anyone had any problem like this? What do you think it could be?

I have a small 'buzz' in my HU. As it's a replacement HU (courtesy of Nissan via warranty), it pretty much started when it was installed.

No sweat to me. As an aftermarket HU is forthcoming this Spring, that should rid my dash of that buzz noise.

Thank You

BTW I remove my ventshade window deflectors and MAN DID THAT TAKE ALOT of noise away while driving at 60-70mph. They are in the trash now. Not sure if i want to do the same to the sunroof visor??????

Probably need an alignment and wheel balance.

Yaku,

I looked under there today and I don't see a spring. Just a wire going from the firewall to the plastic latch.

I don't know, but I got one in that general area, it's either there or up near the passenger A-Pillar and it really bothers me. It's only when I hit a pothole or something (though mild) and it's kinda a deep rattle. Sounds like there's soemthing bouncing around in my glove box, but I've got nothing in there. I also got the one that sounds "metallic" and like it's coming from the upper driver's window area or mid-pillar. I know when I get my system in there these things are gonna get bad, and it's going to start sounding like my '95 Saturn (old car), which really pissed me off.

BTW, XGaspacho, that's MY avatar!!! How dare you! (j/k)

To fix rear deck rattle, just put a piece of carpet underneath and dynamat on the underside of the metal in the trunk. No more rattle w/ 2 12's and 1200 watt amp.

one of these days when it's not so friggin cold out i'm gonna have to take that glovebox out and bang around in there to see if i hear anything rattling. i also have a similar metalic sound but mine sounds like it's coming from the pillar where the driver seat belt is mounted (is there a name for that pillar?) which means the farking thing is right next to my left ear rattling!! i'll let you know if i figure out what it is.

and yeah i know it's your avatar dude but i didnt see yours until after i made mine. i had it as my sig before. and hey, i have seniority over you!
