Some people say that the new 3.5 VQ may run rough and not be as good as the 3.0 VQ. Some theorized that the increased stroke would make it rough in nature. Okay... let's look at this issue.

The VQ30DE-K has a bore and stroke of 3.66 x 2.89. That is an oversquare engine, which can be revved quite a bit.

The VQ35DE has bore and stroke of 3.76 x 3.21. Nissan did bore out the 3.0 in addition to increasing the stroke. It's still an oversquare design. It should be smooth and high revving still. The ratio of bore to stroke is roughly the same.

Other cars...

BMW 2.5 inline 6: 3.31 x 2.95 (oversquare, similar to 3.0 VQ)
BMW 3.0 inline 6: 3.31 x 3.51 (undersquare)
Ford 4.6 V8: 3.6 x 3.6 (square)
Toyota V6: 3.44 X 3.27 (oversquare)

Nice info Paul! Yup an oversquare config should give us a nice rever.

Did you know the Q45 engine VK45DE(I think) has a near 7,000 redline? 7000 from a V8! Nice!

An oversquare engine is one where the bore, the diameter, of the piston is more than the stroke.

Generally a higher reving engine requires a more oversquare (more wider than narrow)

The advantage of an over square design is that piston speed is lower for a given RPM. A lower piston speed is easier to ballance and puts less stress on the various spinning engine parts.

The proof will be in the pudding. I am sure the Nissan engineers will not **** away 7 years of Wards 'wards.

Hmm... by the numbers it looks good.

Wards is concerned about the VQ35DE per this year's awards though. I wonder if the `02 VQ35DE will be improved at all...

I am sure that they are going to improve on the existing (2 year old?) VQ35, just like the found some magic to make the VQ30DE into the VQ30DE-K.

Here's a great article on bore and stroke.
