Grey Dot Theroy for Ignition Coils

As many of you know my ignition coils have gone out and I have been asking numerous questions. Well I finally got my changed and the old ones that were in my car from stock have they grey dot on them as well. Just a heads up that I guess the theroy about the grey dot being the new coils is not true.

definitley did have the ses light, it would flash on me all the time too... keeping your fingers crossed won't help it's going to happen sorry.

Anyone else think that the grey dot meant they were updated? I told them im keeping my old coils and they looked the same as the new ones and i was wondering why some people on here insist that they grey dot meant updated?

I just changed mine. I changed all 6 and one of the original ones had the gray dot but the other 5 did not. All of the new ones I ordered had the gray dot and I was told by someone at the dealer that the new or corrected coils had the gray dot. I bought the car used so if that is true I guess one was already replaced. I also kept my old ones just in case. I never got a misfire code so who knows which one is bad. I just replaced them all since eventually they will all go bad!!

mines were replaced a long time with the ones with the grey dot. The grey fdot means updated version of the crapy 99-00 ones. It's been more than a year since I had mines changed and no problem.

Where are the gray dots located? I just got a set and I don't see them anywhere. Are there different part numbers for these compared to the old ones? Also, are the 2000 Ignition coils interchangeable with 2001? Your answers are appreciated.

Dude. There are pages upon pages of information on ignition coils that have nothing to do with the question I'm asking and I just don't have the time to sit there and look through all of them. Some people do have that leisure time to have that personal time with their computers, but I just don't. I already tried searching the site with google and I did peruse through a couple pages of threads concerning the topic to no avail. I was hoping someone who was familiar with the topic could take a minute to answer the question. Thanks.

They are located on the main portion of the coil - not on the stalk that goes into the motor and sits over the plug.

If you cannot easily find the grey dots with just a cursory look they are not there.

I see where the gray dots are suppose to be located from the picture. I was just wondering if the 22448-2Y001 and 22448-2Y007 (2001 Nissan) coils would work on a 2000 Maxima. Interchageable? It seems like some people say you can and others say you can, but shouldn't.

Also, do the old coils and new coils have different part numbers? Mine don't have dots, but would like some other way to verify that they're updated. Since they're stickers, I'm sure they come off. Thanks again.

Well I got 2001 coils in my 2000 and don't see any problems. They are interchangeable! I think that Nissan didn't want to replace coils on all 2000 models and that's why they released new p/n for 2001 and grey dot instead of a different p/n for 2000

I did my research 2 months ago on this whole coil history so here it goes again:

-Spoke to 5 Nissan dealer service techs and 2 chief mechanics about this and told me they do not recommend swapping coils from an 01 to a 00 max.

-There are NO new part numbers for '00 max coils since they're NOT upgraded ones even though they have this grey dot on them. The grey dot for Nissan means nothing according to them. There is no TSB that describes
replacing old coils with new upgraded ones.

Yeah, and all the Nissan guys told me there was nothing wrong with my vias . ..

oh, not to mention that the head mechanic at 2 nissan dealers said it wasn't possible for the vias to go bad . . .

and, oh, by the way, let's not forget that I had to teach the best nissan MAXIMA tech at the dealer who ultimately replaced my vias about the actuator and that the vias system could be disabled by pulling a plug . ..

while I'm at it, add to that the regional service rep who said nothing wrong with my vias...

Let's see - then there was the "there is no different part number" for the newer less expensive MAF from SEVERAL parts dealers . . .

Ah, of course there was the infamous - it is IMPOSSIBLE to advance the timing using consult - until I showed the mechanic how to do it . . .
