i would try to stay away from cleaning it. you might make it worse. the subarus had the same problem as a matter of fact the mafs were almost identical. we used to clean them with carb cleaner w/toulene. it drys and cleans fast. if you do it just be carful. but dont touch it with a swab or something

I use brake cleaner and afterwards I use compress air to dry it quickly. I've
own the 02 since nov of 01 and I never had any issues with my MAFS. I use
brake cleaner on the 04 altima SE as well as my wife's 02 S10 crew cab. No
issues with the other vehicles either.

No. its good to clean the MAF. I use electronics cleaner from Radio Shack. I used this stuff all the time when I worked for them a while back. It comes with stiff bristles. You can use this but carefully rub gently across the sensor wire.
