quick clutch question

My friend drives a 6 spd tiburon. he told me that theres a saying low gears clutch in and high gears clutch out. So he was shifting from i think 4th, 5th and 6th without using his clutch.

is this ok? is this really a good or bad thing for the clutch. just wondering. i haven't done it at all but i'm just not sure.

I know that it can be done because I've been a buddy of mine do it but a lot of times, he grinds his gears.

sure you can do this, if you want to kill your transmission

So basically you're saying in the higher gears, you're gonna shift w/o depressing the clutch? Try it and let us know how it goes... just to let ya know, ya might hear some grinding...

You can switch gears in higher gears w/o clutch.. you just need to match engine speed perfectly or else you'll grind.

aka drop shifting

not such a problem if ya do it perfectly..... but really bad if ya don't.... it's not a good idea either way, mainly cause it will kill your synch's and round your gears

Why would anyone do this? Do they want to intentionally screw up their car? Just use the clutch. It's there for a reason.

people do this because they think it's cool....

yes...it can be done....but like frankd121 said...the engine revs must match the tranmission revs perfectly, which the only way to learn excatly is practice, practice. I learned how on my dad's MG way back when. The 3rd gear synchro is now gone on that car.....

No, it's not bad for the clutch at all. However, as others mentioned, it will wear the synchos and the tranny will be throwing gears. Power shifting is okay if the tranny isn't synchromesh.

i wasn't planning on doing it..i was just wondering.
he only did it on his car once and it was really smooth. he told me he did it all the time in the truck he was driving in afghanistan when he was in the army. he said they just drove that **** outta those trucks and he almost never used the clutch.

Big rig transmissions don't use synchronizers. Those are really easy to power shift, PLUS, the army truck "wasn't his".

yeah, it can be done. for every day driving it's pointless. the only time
this would be a good idea, is if someone bet you that you couldn't do it.
somtimes instead of asking yourself, "can i do this", you need to ask
yourself, "should i do this?"

I've done it many times. You want to match your revs perfectly to ensure no grinding and it can / does mess up your synchros (like everyone has been saying). You can do it from any gear into any gear (well, not into reverse unless your crazed) so long as the car will allow it. I've done it for various reasons but the main one was because I had a sprained ankle (or foot, can't remember) but that was only for a couple of days, max.

As to why you'd do it? One may be laziness or injury. Another is the "cool" factor. And another is the fact that they may feel pressing the clutch, shifting, releasing the clutch takes too much time... but they are wrong and don't know how to shift properly... And still another reason is if the clutch cable breaks (yep, been there).

If they argue that it doesn't hurt anything then ask them what that grinding sound is about. If they argue that it is cool, ask them what's cool about a car that needs a transmission. And if they argue that its faster to do it that way, tell them they need to learn how to drive a stick (and have them watch some professional drivers and how quickly they shift... wow).

My 2 cents.

They do and they also press the clutch all the time. Watch the in-car camera very closely. Their clutch action is so low, they barely have to move more than their foot. Very cool to see it. And very fast!

EDIT:
Forgot to add that its much easier to upshift doing this than down as the engine will naturally start slowing down when its out of gear so you can much more easily match the revs when you are shifting up as opposed to down shifting (since you have to actually press the gas before you can make it go into gear). Not that complicated but its kinda hard to write out.
