surface rust

how do i get rid of surface rust? one day as I was backing out of my driveway my car slid into a gate. there's no dents but I just need to buff oout some paint as well. I saw that it caused some paint to come off and I was hoping to fix it soon. but due to the weather (salt season) the bare metal has a bit of surface rust. I know before I aply touch up I need to get rid of the rust. do I just sand the rust away then apply touch up? any input is appreciated thanks

i would sand it down then apply touch up paint, and a little spray of clear coat to prevent it from rusting in the future.

if its that small, buy a bottle of "rust remover", apply it for 5-10 minutes, rinse, than retouch with paint.

this green stuff eats rust like crazy! bu dont leave it there too long, or else it will start eating your paint as well!

I would apply primer to the bare (rust removed) metal before using paint on it.

ok so which is best to do? sand or rust removal? I saw a kit at pep boys that had a sanding block, primer and applicator in it. I guess i'll get that and go to work. any tips or tricks of the trade? i'll be sure to take pictures

Id get the rust remover + sanding kit... that way youll get the best result.

first you sand (to get the tough rust out), than you use the rust remover, rinse, dry, sand again, rinse, dry, apply primer, dry, touch-up paint, dry, clear coat if any, dry.
