New rear pads - is this sound normal?

00, rear pads were worn down badly. They had not started to hurt the rotors, so I changed only the pads with $40 organics from autozone. This was maybe 500 miles ago. All when fine although the pistons were stiff and it was hard pushing them (as I twisted, yes) them back in. However, I got them in. They seem to brake properly and evenly, and they are not locked (determined by pushing the car on a flat surface and watching it roll on slight inclines).

Only thing is the old pads had scoured the rotors to some extent (this is naturally going to happen a tiny bit) and they don't quite seem seated. Where pad contacts rotor it's dark and where it doesn't it's still silver. They are slowly increasing the amount of contact between pad and rotor. However, when the pressure on the brake is light, and speed is low, there is a metalic scraping sound. I'd almost expect bad, worn brakes to make that sound, but these are not worn. My hope is that the sound goes away once they're fully seated...ideas?

Thx!

should have replaced the rotors as well... are they the factory rotors?

and i would only use ceramic pads... someone was in my brothers shop this summer with an i35 and he put organic pads and they locked up... he had to get new rotors, pads and calipers.

i would throw the new pads, get new ceramic pads and new rotors.

They are probably factory rotors, but I'm not sure. I was of the understanding that when replacing pads you can keep rotors, but when replacing rotors you always need new pads.

I thought OEM for our cars was a semi-metallic compound...?

if you are not sure... then ya they are the original rotors and it is time to replace them... i just did mine this summer.

i went to Napa and the whole thing cost me less than $200

my brother told me that he thought the max came with ceramic from the factory.... either way i would not keep the orgaincs on. after what i saw what they did to that i35... $$$$ the things melted right to the rotor and super heated the calipers and stuff....

Pads are a matter of preference. I prefer organic vs ceramic.

My pads were replaced along with all new rotors by the dealer on the brake judder TSB. The only time I get the sound you describe is first thing in the morning when first using the brakes, and it goes away within 1 to 2 min...which I think is normal for all of us 5th genners. Your scraping sound doesnt go away after 1 - 2 minutes?

my *guess* is that the sound should go away when it fully seats. aside from that, I would consider replacing rotors on the rear if it doesnt go away right away.

Nope it stays there! It's only at low brake pedal pressure and when the car is on the last legs of slowing down. At high speeds or under moderate->high pressure it doesn't happen.

As the system is now it works fine and in fact feels exactly how it used to, so I'm not super eager to drop $200 and 1-2 hours to redo it all again!

Yea, don't blame ya. I think I'd give it a lil while longer to see if it either goes away or gets worse...

Gotta love these brakes eh?
