New MAS and fuel sending unit.

Last Thursday the wifes 2000 Maxima threw on the Check Engine light and
started sputtering and hesitating. Took it to Nissan. They had it for hours
trying to figure out what was going on. The service guy calls me and tells
me that the K&N filter spacers had come loose and air was flowing around
the filter, causing the car to run rich. Says The spark plugs need to be
replaced and the injectors need cleaning, plus I need a new air filter. The
car has 83K miles on it, so I figure the plugs need to be replaced and the
injectors could need cleaning. $520 later, we get the Max back. She seems
to run much better. Sunday the wife informs me the Check Engine light is
back on! ****!!! Take her back to Nissan. The Service guy just called and
said the computer indicates I need a new Mass Air Flow Sensor and a new
fuel sending unit, for around $950. Lets see...520 plus 950 is....drum roll
please..................
$1470
AGGGHHHHHHH
Am I being ripped off? What can I do?
I feel so abused.

Darn! I don't have search ability here. I have not been on this forum for more
than one year. Ar you saying that the new Nissan MAFS for our 2000 Maxima
is $100, or is this an aftermarket one?

Sure enough! I found the Mass Air Flow Sensor on the internet for $104.
Then I called my dealer's parts department. I asked the parts guy for
part numbers and prices for the Mass Air Flow Sensor for a 2000 Maxima.
He had 2 different part numbers: Num #1: 22680-2Y001 which he said
has been recently changed to 22680AD201. It sells for $103.58 !!!!!!
Cheaper than on the internet! So I call this rip off artist aka Service Rep
and tell him I found the part for $384.42 less than what he was trying to
sell it for. He says, "what part number are you referring to?" Then goes on
about how he was give a different part number and how it cost $488.
So I said, "go around the corner and talk to Jeff. I said you would be coming to
talk to him." What an assh0l@!!!!!! So the $957 job turned into a $459.29
job. Still, I just paid these rip offs $520 last Friday. You gotta do what
you gotta do. SSSHHHHHEEEESSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!

Yeah, we Nissan owners need to stick togeather and stay informed. Think
about it, the Service Advisor does not know that a typical Nissan Mass Air
flow sensor costs just above $100? The more I thionk about it, the more I am
convinced he was trying to rip me off and pocket the difference! Now we
all know that a MAF cost about $100, not about $500. Last Friday this
jerk was preparing me to pay around $500. He told me that they were trying
to save the MAF and that I was lucky it could be saved. Today he said it was
shot. Said the computer would not take a reset bacause of it and that I must
replace it...For $488. Damn liar is what he is! I'm getting pissed off just
thinking about it. I think I will talk to the manager tomorrow when I pick our
baby up.

it pays to be informed. just out of curiousity, how did they charge you (parts and labor) for the air filter. so you know for future reference that it takes about 30 seconds to change it. pick one up at any parts chain or nissan and undue 2 clips and pull out the assembly, put the new one and you are done. this is for the paper filters so you should have just bought the k&n cleaning kit.
also, in most instances, the fuel injector cleaning is not necessary. i have had friends that worked for many different dealers and they pushed it on everyone. you can get the same results from a bottle of chevron techron fuel system cleaner or BG44K/
finally, what the told you about the k&n sounds like a load of crap. the k&n is the same filter size as the stock one and even though it come with those gaskets, its not necessary in our stock airbox. nissan has used the same air filter on almost every single vehicle since the mid 80's and it is needed on some but not ours.

I feel the pain! I dont know if complaining to the manager will do any good.. cuz they say "ya ya ya" to us and may not even talk to their employees! Atleast that what i used to do when worked in CustomerService, but surprisingly people loved me!
My nissan service advisor is pretty good with me... he doesnt push stuff on me... Hopefully he is still there until the day i trade in my Max!

The rip-off artists spent around 4-5 hours trying to figure out what was wrong
with the Max. The tech did not believe the codes from the computer. The
computer indicated all three O2 sensors were bad. The advisor called me up
and asked if I was willing to spend $180 for a complete diagonosis, vs the $88
standard charge for hooking up to the computer. Well...I needed our Max back
so I agreed. At the end of the day, they said they found the problem........
my K&N filter caused all the problems!!! Yeah
Said I needed new plugs, they were fouled by running rich. I know changing
the plugs is not cheap on this car. Then rip-off artist claims I need to have
the fuel injectors cleaned. Let's see....New paper air filter: $15?
plugs changed...$200? fuel injector cleaning....$200? I'm making reasonable
guesses here.. I think the *******s were trying to recover the five hours it
took them to come up with the K&N story. I'm going to ask for a break down
on pricing today when I get her back. BTW, the rip-off artists said the
diagonstic fee would be applied to the work done. I don't think so!
