i just got the car and the 02 max gle has 88,000 miles. I want to take care of it like a baby and do as much of the work myself as possible. there is a service engine soon light on and a/t check comes on occasionally.

1. where is the best place to find the book/cd/etc with the technical info for doing maintence/repairs

2. where is the best place to buy the unit required to diagnose the service engine soon light

3. besides regular tune up items what else should be done

Welcome to the Maxima club!

If you happen to find a hookup for the CD or the .pdf of the FSM (Factory Service Manual), I'd be interested also. I hate not having a resource like that for my vehicles.

Also, I'm not sure where you can buy the OBD-II scanners, but you can go down to a lot of auto stores (Autozone, etc.) and they'll give you the code for free. It takes about 30 seconds for them to grab it, and doesn't cost you a dime.

Any auto parts store carries a generic unit, or you can try one of the ones that work with a PC/PDA/etc.

3. besides regular tune up items what else should be done
You'll need to completely diagnose the car. It could need a bunch of stuff or just a little bit. Common things are ignition coils, spark plugs, air filter, oil change, chassis lube, fuel filter, brakes, all fluids flushed/replaced, as well as a light bulb/electrical system check.

Welcome to the .org.... now go read the How-To and FAQs.
