Thinking about selling my car

Although this isn't a 100% sure thing, i'm contemplating selling my Max. I just posted it in the FS forums to see what I can get for it. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=382709

I seem to have caught the Lexus bug. My father has an LS400, & my sis just bought an ES300. Having driven the GS400/430 before, i'm itching for one right now.

Unless you guys start talking me out of it (i'll definately take everyone's opinion into consideration), i might pull the trigger on something. Let me know what you think guys! Am i stupid? I have no probs with the max & it only has 14K miles.

Your not stupid your just looking for something more luxurious. Its normal and nothing is wrong with that. I will simply say that if you are bored of your max and wouldnt mind investing some money into a car that will more likely fit your needs then go for it. On the other hand if you are enjoying your max and just feel an urge to upgrade that might not be your best bet. All in all it would be easier to say if you stated your financial position as well. If you are loaded then go for the lex, if not i would reconsider before spending thousands of dollars.

thats a big jump from a max to a 430. unless money is burning a hole in your wallet, i would keep the maxima for a few more years and then consider a lexus.

Well, i'm DEFINATELY not bored of my max. It makes me smile EVERY day. Money-wise, it's not gonna end up costing me much more than i'm hoping to get for the max. I can get a 98-00 GS400 anywhere from $15K-22K. Might even splurge a little and go for an '01 GS 430 that's around $25K.

I guess hearing about how the resale on our cars sucks so bad, i'm trying to sell it before i rack up a lot of miles & the value drops waaay down. I hear/experienced such good things w/ Lexus that it's tempting for me.

Honestly, you should just hold your max for now (atleast for 1-2 years). WHY? Because the redesigned 06 Lexus GS430 is coming out. Since you gonna go lexus, then go with the new 06 GS. It looks drop dead sexy.

As much as i LOVE the new GS, it's nowhere near my price range - and won't be for a loooong time.

Personally I would wait a couple years and get the 2006 GS that is coming or the M35-45. Thats my plan.

Since when does the Maxima have poor resale value? I always thought the Maxima was above average in terms of retaining its value...

Anyway yeah you've already paid for the bulk of the depreciation for the car...it will cost you less in the long run to keep the car for a few more years. Lexus makes some great cars though...how much can you pick up an SC430 for?

Then again, I'm from the school of thought where you buy it new and drive it until it dies...my '96 is at 203k and I have no intention of replacing it anytime soon.

Good luck on your decision.

aliti19 my man, how ya been brotha? keep the max for few more yrs or at least up to 45/50k. man ur max is basically still brand new. u must only drive it on sundays. jk i would hold off on the lex, cough cough......hhhemmmmmmmmm toyota! basically you think you are upgrading because of all the luxury features the gs offers, but the truth is the minute you drive that $20-$25k used, and i do mean used, lexus, you have really depreciated the value, and then that poor lex is probably only gonna be worth $15k, but by the time you want to get rid of the lex, i mean toyota, you will maybe get $5k for it if its under 100k and in great condition. you have an excellent max, it being a 6mt, is all in all a great thing. those are very hard to come by. u can get 5speeds all day long, but i really dont think your max is going to lose that much value! but if you ever do need to trade it in and get full value or even a little above what it's worth, just lemme know, my cousin works as a sales manager at Kelly Nissan in Oak Lawn , just to help you out there! i traded my 95 max(115k and a few dings n scratches) back in 01 for the ae, it was only bluebook valued at $5k but he had the dealership give $7500 for it which help with the down payment on the ae i purchased. hope this helps you change your mind about that toyota, or lexus i mean! peace good luck but try n keep the max if ya can, besides your status on here is a maxima addict.

The GS will also depreciate a lot, its just that $5K out of $55K is a smaller percentage than a $5K out of $25k. Any GS that you will pick up, 2001 or 1998, will loose about 4-5 grand in any year up to the point when the depreciation stops, like 10 yrs old/150k mi. I thought that my 2000 GXE is loosing 2-3 grand a year is a lot and really wanted a GS, but then learned it will be long-term financial drain, and decided to keep my Max for now.

You sure you want to give up your 6 speed for an auto?

The MT is the reason you smile each time you get into your Max.

Gs

I thought you were considering a new GS vs. you '02 Max. I don't see why you think a '98-00 GS is so great. The car performs close to the max, its luxury is also pretty close. I worked as a travel representative for exotic car rentals, houses, etc, so I have driven many cars. Mercedes, I could see. BMW, I'm not too found of, Lexus is ok, but you're talking 5-7 years old for that kind of money vs. 12,000 miles on a '02 Max. Bad decision imo.....

Please don't be that guy that drives like he's a bada$$ b/c he's in a lexus and tells people, i have a lexus, when the cars all beat up... lol... you get my drift???

No, no, no... i'm not like that at all. And if you know how I am about my cars, it would definately not be beat up.

GS430 is sick. I've considered it too, but the new GS series is coming out next year so I'd hate to buy a new car that's gonna be replaced right away...

If money is not an issue and you are not getting a brand new lexus. I would also go for a Lexus if I were you. The workmanship on that machine is one of the best out there. I have a buddy who has a 2000 GS300. He had been to 3 accident which he caused himself. After the repair and 100k miles later, the car is running like new. He didn't spend a dime on fixing his car other then the accident he caused. I also wanted to get a GS300 or GS430 as my next target. I admire the luxury, power and reliability. Lexus had all the quality I need. Good luck.

Well I wouldn't. I don't think you'll get $20,500...well, you may, but the car really isn't worth it. I could get an 03 with same miles for less on autotrader. Maxima resale is just hideous.

Thanks for all the replies guys. After getting my car back from the dealer a couple days ago (new MAF), i just stopped and looked at it for a while. I've had a maxima since I first started driving. I have always been identified by friends & family by my maxes. What the hell was i thinking?!?! The GS was a random idea that popped into my head a few days ago.

Thanks for keeping me from selling my baby!

"we"? Maxes are nice, but a GS is a GS, and it's his money sooo.....
I wouldn't buy one (isn't me) but would rock one if given to me. Haha, I'd drive anything if it was given to me.

Whatever makes you happy.

Keep it, or sell it...do what you want to do and don't let a bunch of anonymous people on a webboard make up your mind for you.

Well... most of those anonymous people (chicago area), I have met & hung out with several times, so I value their opinions.
