it's like a tint paint to paint your side markers

Here's what I did to tint my tail lights.

Cleaned my tail lights and wet sanded it. Sprayed a coat of nightshade from about 8 to 10 inches away going right to left. I let it dry and sprayed another coat going in the same direction. I put about 4 - 5 coats and 3 clearcoats on top. I also let the clearcoat dry in between coats.

if you dont like the way the it turned out, you can wet sand the nightshade off the lights and do over. i have done this before with success. but before you do this, try wet sanding with 1000 or greater and finishing off with rubbing compound - this might get rid of the "drips" (i think you might be describing "orange peel"?) and the swirls.

when i did a bad spray job, i used 600 to remove the nightshade; finished the plastic lens with with 800, 1000, & 1200; then repainted.
