300zx brake upgrade

I have a 00SE and want to upgrade my brakes...I would like to install the 300Z calipers if possible. Somebody tell me if it's plausable and what it may involve...Is it cheaper than big brake kit? Do I need a master cylinder upgrade? details please

Fortunately for you, somebody has already put together a kit that includes caliper relocation brackets, new brake lines, and even the calipers themselves if you don't already have them. You do NOT need to do a master cylinder upgrade with this kit. It uses 300ZX calipers and 6th gen Maxima rotors (larger than the 5th gen rotors).

It does, indeed, cost less than most other aftermarket big brake kits, but it has the same clearance issues as other big brake kits. Your stock SE 17'' wheels will not be clear these brakes. Many aftermarket 17'' and 18'' wheels will be fine, though.

The kit I'm referring to is the first kit listed on the page I linked you to. It is a front kit only (like MOST big brake kits). The second kit is for the rear wheels (not necessary, but nice to maintain balanced braking bias). The third kit is much cheaper, because it uses your stock calipers over the larger 6th gen rotors. That kit will fit under your Maxima's stock 17'' wheels (just barely), but it doesn't really do what you want, since it doesn't use 300ZX calipers.

Most 17" wheels that people have on this forum will NOT fit these calipers. You need something with offset of 34-36mm. I have 38mm and I needed to ship the caliper brackets by 2mm to keep my wheel's spokes from rubbing on the calipers.

From: Auburn WA,
Thanx for the info! It's nice seeing that they will sell the bracket and lines seperately because I have a good hook up for the calipers and rotors allready, Just been waitin to see if anything else was needed. Oh yea, wheels wont be a problem with my 19's

it "really" doesn't matter what offset you have... mainly the design of the wheel.

I agree with you A33, but only to a point. Not many wheels are designed with big brake kits in mind. I can take 42mm offset 18x8 TE37s off a RSX and try to install them on my Maxima and it will NOT clear the calipers. There are diff design wheels out there with thinner spokes and diff design of the spoke and how it curved. I do know SSR Comps with 38mm offset do clear the calipers just fine. On a side note 350Z Nismo LM wheels look sick on a 5th gen, just that with their offset the front wheel sticks out about 1" out of the fender well, where the rears sit flush. I was going to get those for my Max, but after installing a set I was really dissapointed they didn't fit. I used all 4 of the front Z wheels, which I belive are 30mm offset.

Well I got an E-mail about 2 piece rotors for us with the 04 Maxima rotors- that weight almost as much as my light weight wheels...

Mike,
Thanks for your inquiry to Precision Brakes Company. It just so happens
that we carry a kit in our line-up for that would interchange with
01'-04'Maxima. That utilizes 328x32or(12.79"x1.25")rotors. They are 2pce
Cross-drilled and slotted, or if you prefer just
(drilled)or(slotted)or(plain). These would probably work fine since they
are only off by .19" as compared to the measurements in your e-mail. They
would run $149.00ea. for aluminum hats and $154.99ea for the rotors(this
includes the mounting hardware as well). Let me know if these will work for
you. We have a special this month with no shipping anywhere in the U.S.

I'm really interested in this setup and might buy it. I did see Matt Blehm saying hes working on a 2 piece rotor for our cars with his brake upgrade. I'm going to wait till Matt replies to my E-mail and see when his deal will be ready, and the price.

We would need the hats and rotors basically- for grand total of around 600 bux for both sides. The rotors are repleacable by just removing them from the rotor hat. It would probably cut the weight of the rotors by about half- bringing it down to bout the same or less weight of the stock 5th gen rotors.
