How to Fix/reset Sunroof motor

Hi all,

This is my first post. I have been lurking around since I bought my 2001 Maxima last November. I have found many great tips and info about my new(used) car.

I now have an issue that I can't figure out and I'm hoping someone here will know the answer. My sunroof only opens a few inches at a time when I push the button. To open the sunroof all the way I have to push the button several times.

When I first bought my car at a Nissan dealership it had this problem which I insisted they fix before I bought it. The mechanic said it was an easy fix, they just had to reset the motor for the sunroof.

It has worked fine ever since but of course being winter I didn't really open it much. The other day was nice and sunny in Northern Virginia so I thought why not get some air and of course it didn't work correctly.

Does anyone know how to reset the sunroof motor. I don't want to take it to a dealer if it's not needed (no warranty anyway). I read somewhere about disconnecting the battery. Maybe pulling the fuse?

It sure would be nice to fix it before the weather really gets nice.

Thanks

Keep car off. Relay near driver side kick panel. If you can't find it turn car on. Flip sunroof switch till you hear the relay. Once you've found it, turn car off. Unplug relay. Turn car on. Turn car off. Plug relay back in Sunroof should work. That easy, even though my instructions seem complicated.

Is it just me, or does all 5th gen sunroof's open a few inches? (tilt) I know on mine, it doesn't tilt nearly as far as it did on my 3rd gen...

And by pushing the button, I am assuming you mean just tilting, not opening?

No,

I'm referring to opening the sunroof all the way. There are 2 buttons that control the sunroof one is for the tilt and one is to open it. Tilt works but when I try to open it, it moves about 2 inches back and the stops.

By the way deckdout2, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I can't find the relay. If I look in the fuse box, I see a blue plug (next to the fuses) that I believe is a relay but I'm not sure. Any other way of identifiying the correct part? I couldn't hear any sound when I pushed the sunroof switch.

Anyways, when my sunroof acts weird, I just hold down the Tilt Down button for some time (maybe 5-10 secs) until ya hear something and then its fine after... sorry for the extremely unscientific answer, but I haven't had time to do the research on this.... Deckdout seems to have a more technically sound solution though...

just check your private message and do what i told you. i have NO IDEA why this hasn't been made a sticky, or isn't in the FAQ.

1. Close your sunroof all the way.
2. Turn off your car.
3. Disconnect your battery.
4. Turn on your lights, and step on your brakes. Do it like 10 times. (You are basically draining the system.)
5. Hook up your battery.
6. Tilt your sunroof up, then back down.
7. Pull back on the slide lever. It should be fixed.

It's basically like rebooting your computer.

although this could be as effective and get the same results. sounds like a little bit more work. to me just unplugging the relay and plugging it back in is a little easier. thanks for the additional how to though.

yeah, probably. the only thing is that EVERYONE knows where the battery is. not sure everyone can find the relay. i've never tried it that way (luckily i've only had to do it once.) but yeah, if you can find te relay, and ot works, your way is faster.

That's just the ECU reset for the pre-02s. It is a "reboot".

that works great on a 2k2 or newer. unfortunately, it doesn't work for the 2k-2k1.

Why is everyone making it so difficult? 03on18s was dead on. I did this last night cuz my slider had stopped working. I pushed the vent open switch, then once the sunroof had popped open, I tapped the vent close button until the sunroof closed, then heard a click, problem solved. Forget disconnecting the battery and all that crap, I did mine with the car running at midnight and it's fixed. This is also the procedure in the owner's manual, so I don't know why anyone would be disconnecting wires.

PAY ATTENTION. you have a 2002. the reset procedure that is in your 2002 manual, is not even in the 2000-2001 manual.
you CAN'T RESET THE MOTOR IN THE 2000-2001 LIKE THAT. jesus f'n christ.
how many times do i need to point that out?

if you don't know what you're talking about, don't post. you're just confusing people.

Just to confirm what Ihavea5spd suggested. I tried pushing the switch until I heard a click but it didn't fix it(that would have been easy). I haven't disconnected the battery yet (I plan on doing it this weekend).

I did see on the Nissan web site a TSB for replacing and resetting the sunroof for 2001 Maxima but I need to pay Nissan to see the answer. Anyone have access to these TSB's?

Search through the Stickies, plenty of TSBs there:

I did search through them. Thanks for the tip though. I came across this TSB on the Nissan web site http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/TSB/Feb/53816.asp but I couldn't get access to the info unless I paid for it. Not knowing if it is what I am looking for, I didn't pay.

What's the TSB number? http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/

p.s. if you go the battery disconnect route, note that you will lose any codes that may be stored in the ECU, the radio station settings and the trip odometer readings (that's all I can think of).

The number is different than NTB (FC9002952). I think it covers more than maximas but it lists the Maxima in its description

maxima's tsb for the sunroof motor (at least when i asked the dealership) was to charge $300 to put a new sunroof motor in. it will take you 5 minutes to fix it. go do it now.

That number doesn't say anything to me. If you check the TSBs, they are sequentially numbered as NTByy-01 and so forth, where yy is the year issued and NTB stands for Nissan Technical Bulletin (Infiniti TSBs are ITB).

Here is the information from the Nissan web site that I can access. Click this link to see where it came from http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/TSB/Feb/53816.asp
I know this is for replacement of the sunroof but it mentions resetting the motor. I could just be chasing after shadows but I know when I bought the car they reset the motor without any effort. I guess I should have asked them at the time.

Oh well, I'll unplug the battery, I'm sure that will work.

An update to my sunroof problem. I disconnected the battery as suggested and it fixed the problem. I did lose my radio settings and clock but that seems to be all.
