I went to Autozone yesterday and the person told me that they don't read CEL codes anymore? He said something about it being a state law? Does that make sense to any of you guys?

Also, my CEL was on for about a month then it randomly went away for a week and it just came back on yesterday. Whats that mean?

the ones in virginia check them but only during the day for security reasons. did you go when it was dark?

 

no i went in the middle of the day... it was a little wet outside? maybe thats what he meant. i'll check again on a dry day

 

or maybe that person didn't want to do it... try another they are like Walmarts...they are everywhere......

 

Just had mine read there last week...

 

you can pick up a code reader at advance auto for $79. It reads the codes and clears them on any car built after 96. I figured as many codes the max throws it was worth it to not have to go to Autozone every time

Dont know about a chip. i just plug it in under the steering wheel and...WHAM......Change the coils...LOL Anyways it was pretty simple to use

 

i went to autozone just last week and had the code pulled on my friends 2k1 montero just fine...i would actually rather make the trip to autozone every time than spend the $79 or however much for the code reader, but that's just me...

 

yeah i dunno about a chip. anything obdII should have just one clip for import. then crappy ford has one and chev too.but im oretty sure imports use the same

 

The one i have plugged right into the Max and I plugged it into a buddies ford pick up the next day. I think all OBDII have the same connectors.

 

hmm thats weird. maybe scanners are different. the one i am talking about is like 1800 bucks. i use it at my school.

 

I never heard of Autozone don't do OBDII scan. Never heard of such laws wherever you are.

 

My local Autozone pulls, but they have to have at least 3 employees in the store to be able to let one of the others go outside to pull codes.

 

I tried to have the scan done last week at Autozone. The first store I tried couldn't get the OBD online to read the codes, and a couple of slack-jawed-yokel "hemi fan" employees out front smoking butts gawked at me, as they told the guy doing the scan that the OBD can't read my Nissan computer. I knew this was bull, so I went to another Autozone that just opened, and the kid got the OBD on line effortlessly, and to my luck no codes were present.

This just goes to show the variations in quality of the people that work at these stores. A lot of these people are not mechanics by trade, and easy answers are always the best way for a novice employee to get one customer looking for a free service out of the store, to make room for the next one with cash and products in hand.

Try a different location and see what they say (or call a few).

 

Yours is probably able to check the ealier vehicles too. All mine will do is read the codes and delete the ones stored in 1996 to present vehicles. I have to look up the codes to see what the prob is but the org has them all listed... so its easy. Most car manufacturers are using the same codes. Or atleast thats what the book that comes with it says. I would always look up each car in the proper manual to be sure.
