auto - difficult to move gear selector handle out of park and into reverse

2003 SE Auto

For past several months I have an annoying issue with shifting from Park to Reverse. The handle is sometimes difficult to move into Reverse even on flat ground with ER brake set and foot fully depressing the brake pedal. I can feel the handle rubbing or grinding past the mechanism that keeps you from shifting with NO foot on the brake. First 20,000 miles it would shift smoothly into reverse. But the past several months it hangs up like half the time and I have to use alot of extra force to move it into reverse. This is not the trans but the mechanism that keeps the gear selector handle from moving into reverse. Is there an easy way to adjust something under there?

It really only happens for me when I let the car rest on the transmission instead of the emergency brake. Sometimes on a slight hill I don't see a need for the E-brake, so I just throw her in park and get out. After a while of sitting, when I go to put it in reverse, it is very tight as you described. So tight, in fact, that I used to be weary of snapping the shifter arm or breaking something else. I realized that it's not really that tight, but a fair PITA, nonetheless.

here is the EASY fix.. when you stop your car put the car in park but dont let your foot off the brake, put your e-brake on then release your foot from the brake and get out of your car.

When you start your car put the car in reverse or drive then release the e-brake, there-for the stress of the hill is on the brakes (like its supposed to be) and not on the tranny)
