IN EXCESS OF 145MPH TOP END

What's Up Team, this is Quentin. I said to myself that I wouldn't do it, but after reading some of the comments about the Y2K maxima's top end speed, I just had to test my own, to feel not so left out of the game. So, as planned, this morning at 6:45am I planned my attack route, a long stretch of I-285 in South Atlanta. With my brother in a 300ZX, roughly a mile in front of me on the cell phone, scouting for state troopers that might be hidden, I did it. I punched the accelerator and was brave enough not to let up till it would go no faster!! With a cold engine and about 3 gallons of amoco super premium mixed with octane booster and gas treatment, along with Bridgestone Z rated tires I ran past the 300ZX this morning a few milimeters over the 145MPH reading on the speedometer. The car, a 2001-SE Auto with 3900 miles on it. Man!!, I tell you! if their was ever a car that runs that smooth and effortless over the 140MPH mark I'm a living witness that the maxima is one of those cars!!
Interesting enough, when I got to around 100 to 105MPH the GS400 two lanes over took chase behind me and pulled up to my bumper at around 125MPH but faded off into the distance suddently, I guess seeing that I had too much momentum at the time. Would have been interesting to see him pass me at 150MPH!!!!
Tell me, How fast have you topped out at so far and what special additives or equip did you use to enhance the efforts?

You should dig up a recent Y2K article-->
and then look at the speedo error at the highest recorded speed. At 145mph, 4-5% speedo error is worth about 5 mph. Hey, it could mean you were going over 150mph
Note: if the error reading is xxx% at 6o mph, it's gonna be >xxx% as the speed gets higher.

(A/T) BTW, you must be insane to push your car to WOT @ 3900 miles on your odo. Cold engine too. What you thought as brave could cost you dearly later on. Due to Micropolishing on engine components, it takes time for your piston rings to fully seat. Maybe I'm being a party pooper, but I'm a mechanic, and I didn't go WOT til 11,000 miles, now with 16,000 and after doing valve lash twice, it's a b****~!~!
Just watch out, don't want Maxima owners to lose their pride and joy.

DAMN! I guess i better lay off the throttle if what you say is true...I made 4 passes @ the track w/ only 700 miles on my 00' Max.... OOOoooOOOPs!
Some questions.........
Do you have any mods yet. When Russ had his intake and y pipe on his 2k Auto he gained tons of top end power. Really TONS shown on the dyno. But my question is that his auto was limited at 133 on the speedo. There is a pick of it bouncing off it on his site. He said that the car accelerated rapidly up to 133 and then just hit the speed limiter. So I wonder if the 2k1 autos removed the limiter?

Hawkdog.....
Do you have a 5sp? Russ had the auto. My point was I think the Auto is limited(electronicaly) at 133. The 5sp has a claimed speed by nissan at like 142-143. I belive that it is totally posible too...even higher with a few mods. It just that russ's car raced up to 133 and stoped there....qucikly(in his words).

You all should be happy!
I know its not a 5th gen but when my father bought a '95 GXE some years back (5 speed) I blasted it to test top speed and it governed at 188 km/hour. Thats about 117-118 mph. This was in 4th gear and it reached that speed very quickly, then the "thud" and down goes the speed. Did it twice, it was quite depressing.

LOL!! Thanks for Replying (Some Info!)
Thanks to the entire forum for the replies, Team!!
In essence, after my test run I called my Nissan contact in LaJolla, CA to see what the inside scoop was on top speed. My engineer client mentioned that on the 2001-SE models, nissan actually released a very small batch of maximas with a slightly higher ECU limiter calibration as part of their tweaking process. He could not specify on the phone because it's classified info but did keep mentioning the number 200. These cars were the first to be ship out for the 2001 campaign all over North America and are probibly gone.
He said it seems as though I was lucky enough to grab one of them because I did purchase my max from the dealerships first load from the trucks. Matter of fact it was on the truck as I did the deal. So, a speed of 145 or more can be reached on only a handful of SE's Auto's out their. My question to him was how can you keep track of them to get technical data? He laughed an said, "We have ways". My guess is theirs a V-Chip somewhere, an wouldn't you know it? Big Brother (Nissan) really is watching us!! Damm!! and double Damm!!

All I can say is not to bad all.
I have only made runs into the 130's so far in my 2K.
But I have learned one intersting thing about all maximas and it is they all seem to be differnt. I do know that not all reported top speeds are accureat from the maker. I was gunned when I was younger and full of more **** and vinager in my 3rd gen at 152 by a state trooper (that was fun) This is a car that supposedly cannot go that fast. But I will say that the needle was completely burried. So the only way to find out is to push it. But do it with caution. And dont be stoopid like I was. And remeber that if you are running stock tires they are not rated for these speeds.
