Get Extended Warranty or Is the Max Reliable Enough?
Get Extended Warranty or Is the Max Reliable Enough?
Here is the situation. I have an 03 with 48k miles. I can get an extended diamond (bumper to bumper) warranty for around 1,400 for up to 3years/75,000. Since i only drive around 8,000 miles a year i feel that its the perfect one. Now the situation is that my Bose acts up from time to time and with this warranty i would be able to replace it after two months of having the insurance (probation period i believe). Also i always wanted to get an intake but am scared of BLOWING THE DAM MAF. But with this warranty the MAF will be covered. I dont street race or do crazy stunts and i also dont plan on modding the Max too much because i like the way it performs already. So should i shell out over 1400 get this warranty and see if it would be useful for me over the next three years, or save the 1400. Buy a new headunit (aftermarket) stick with the original airbox and enjoy one more year of powertrain warranty. I think the Maxima is a pretty reliable car, so im not sure if it would be worth getting the warranty. Your opinions are welcome
Get the extended, it's peace of mind ... so if and when MAF/Tranny issues arise .. you'll be ready. But I think tha't s a bit pricey for that warranty, I got a 100k 5 yrs for about 500 less, and I am not required to take it to Nissan.

Mass Airflow Sensor:
The mass air flow sensor is placed in the stream of intake air. It
measures the intake flow rate by measuring a part of the entire
intake flow. It consists of a hot film that is supplied with electric
current from the ECM. The temperature of the hot film is controlled
by the ECM a certain amount. The heat generated by the hot film
is reduced as the intake air flows around it. The more air, the
greater the heat loss.
Therefore, the ECM must supply more electric current to maintain
the temperature of the hot film as air flow increases. The ECM
detects the air flow by means of this current change.

I'm in the same position, bought an extended Nissan warr. till 60k and it's gonna be up soon. Warr. Direct requires an inspection to be done for $100. I'm looking for some more options.
I wish i got it for mine. So far after my 3yr/36k mile expired i've have both bearings go in front, my abs light is on, i have to do the o2 sensor tsb, and now that my powertrain warranty has only less than 1k miles left my trannys acting up. I'm sure when I bring it in the dealer won't be able to find anything wrong until the warranty is up.
^^^ Uhh...I don't get it. It just came with your car, you don't know the company, yet you know it costs $500 less for better coverage. How about looking on your policy and posting the name of the company or phone number? You got to have at least one of those to make a claim. Not trying to start anything here, but what company only excludes belts, brakes, battery, fluids, and windows? At the very least, any legit business is also going to exclude shocks, sealed beams, cosmetic parts, exterior body parts, lights, wheels, seats, carpet, anything made of rubber, manual tranny if you have it, etc.
If the car = manual tranny, dont bother...if auto, by all means, yes.
All (well, almost all) recent Max auto trannies fail inside of 100k miles....that alone will make the extended warrantee worthwhile...
Manual trannies are bulletproof and clutches are not covered anyways, so.....not worth ir for manual tranny cars as Maxes are otherwise very, very reliable......

I see the Maxima as a reliable car that shouldnt really give any headaches.
I wouldnt get the warranty. I've only had wear and tear issues on my car that are not covered. (ie tires, brakes, suspension, bulbs)
It's a waste of money. My brother in law bought a warranty for $1400, he hasnt used it once. (2001 Max 90K)
The Max doesnt really start going bad until after 100 - 125 K mi. Even then, the problems are minor.
I've got 120K, and other than normal maintence, I've had to replace the coils and CV's. Easy fix.
If you look further at warranties, the Maxima rates one of the best in reliability.

overall it depends on how you are about your car. if you are very diligent about the maintenance and/or do your own repairs than it probably makes more sense to save the 1400 for these efforts in the future. remember, the 2003 maxima was the last one made in japan and is overall considered very reliable. however, i do agree that if you have an auto and plan to keep the car for a long time, that a warranty is worth considering. an example of japaneese reliability....i have a 91 miata with 97k that has only had ONE item in its entire life that would have even qualified for a warranty claim (clutch slave clyinder).
imo, i view warranties as taking a "piece of my wallet" rather than giving me any "peace of mind".
