Cold air with stock airbox

I designed a cold air intake with the stock airbox. Cost: <$20
Utilized the K&N air filter and made the cold air attachments to the front opening of the air box. No mods to the stock box. Cold air comes from the bottom of the engine compartment. Works great. Engine performance seems consistence, even when engine is warm.

Will post photos and parts list, if anyone is interested.

I want to see pics, how's the sound? Still sounds stock since no modifications were done to the stock unit correct? Pics plz.

I'm doing another slew of dynos this weekend Maybe I can add this in there.

You can barely hear it. If you're next to a wall on the driver's side, You can hear the intake. Sounds good, but not loud like an aftermarket cold air intake. It's even quieter that the GAB with the hangers. Performance seems to be about the same as the GAB, but the performance seems stable. (no hot air)
I will post pics of the OSCAI and parts list.

And this by no means is reinventing the wheel either... Just curious, how similar are the A33 airboxes? (01 vs 02) Ha anyone though of using 6th gen tubes/some other hardware on the A33? The resonator tube looks more straight through, not that this is a good thing in some cases and the fron air damn looks much more generous, but then considering the heflty price of plastic mold that is unkown in gains... maybe that was a bad idea.

Umm, you need to get a host to post them, cardomain, or photobucket, etc
or post a link (same thing essentially)

Looks very "pro". Any way to use a Tee and connect the stock intake with the "CAI" portion??

Also I want to see a shot from the top. Does the engine bay look "empty"?

Otherwise, Excellent work! Looks awesome!

looks interesting....but my question is....where does it exit at the bottom? Can you take more pictures of where it exits?

I have the MAXINXS mod done to my car....I know this mod works becuz I did a pull on the freeway going 100+....then when I pulled over and popped open the hood...the intake snorkle was DAMN cold...and the home depot piping was so so cold.....I dunno if I got gains out of this mod....but at least I know cold air is getting inside the intake now...

I've got something like this and have had it for nearly 1.5 years already. I don't run the pipe all the way to the bottom of the car for fear of sucking in water. I've noticed consistent performance, barely any drop in low end torque and a lot more power up top. Check my sig and you can see the setup.

I'v had it this way for several weeks and had no incidences with Foreign Objects, but injested stuff when it was a 'scoop' facing foward. That's why I cut the elbow tube. And you're right, Engine running strong, hot days and the air box / interior tube was still cold. Because the intake is taking in more air, I check the filter often. So far, heavy rain was not an issue, Dry as a bone. I guess the water can't make it up the vertical tube.

If anyone in Honolulu needs the 3" tube, let me know. I have about 8' left over. If you buy it by the foot its kinda expensive. Cheaper to buy it by the 10' length, but you won't need much. E-mail me.

Nice work. I've done similar work on my cousin's Sentra SE-R. Where did you find the black PVC piping?

As far as sucking up water - I wouldn't worry about it. Some people think we have shop vacs for engines. Even if you did sit that spout in a puddle of water, I think the engine would stall from lack of air before it would suck anything into the intake. We don't have an air tight intake system, so there is not enough vacuum created by the engine to suck the heavy water up. Rock on.

i wouldn't worry about water. if your engine somehow manages to fight gravity and suck water up through a couple of feet of pipe, i don't think it's going to jump the gap between the front of the intake and the air filter.

He has a very good and smart point..... I would add a screen to the bottom so all debris stay out.... I'm definetly going to do it....

Yeah, I have run a scoop at the bottom of my Mustang GT and then Taurus SHO for years and never had a water sucking problem. I would drill a hole in the bottom of the airbox if there isn't one yet for any water/ moisture to drain out if it gets that far (to the filter)

Water ingestion aside, you'd be surprised how adept rodents (and other vermin) are at taking up residence in 'certain' places. That intake scoop looks like a good place to nest, being out of the view of predators.

even so, is the rodent going to get past the air filter?

I dont know about Hawaii (where maxfive-0 lives) but in NYC, a typical rat could easily make its way through a filter element. (Filter element probably makes for good nesting material.)

Couldnt tell from the pics...how did you connect to the stock airbox? Did you drill a hole? into the front facing plastic part?
