Ok, so my mom was talking about trading in her Subaru Legacy. And she really liked my Maxima. So after some persuading, I finally talked her into it. Today she went and traded the subaru in on a 2001 SE.
Just goes to show you what a car the Maxima really is. You can keep your Supras, Mustangs, TLs and the rest. Here is a car who appeals to someone who likes fast 4-doors with standard-shift (me), and someone who likes a roomy, comfortable sedan with a smooth-shifting automatic (my mom.) Our taste in cars is completely different, but we have the same car! How many other cars can you say that about?!
As an aside, this was the first time I have driven an automatic Maxima. I have to say that I came away somewhat impressed. The shifting is smoother, yet more crisp than any other auto I have driven. It upshifts perfectly at low, moderate and moderately-heavy acceleration. I only punched it once (it is my mom's brand new car after all), and it did shudder a little, which slightly disappointed me. Though I have yet to drive an auto that doesn't. And I did notice right away the loss of power between the standard and the auto.
Then there is the downshifting. In short, I was appalled. I really think Nissan can do better. It hesitates, then abrubtly slams into second. And first; forget it, I wont even try that again. I didnt have the ***** to try gate-shifting manually. Mom probably would have pushed me right out the door. Not that it was much worse than alot of other autos I have driven. But it certainly wasnt the best. Downshifting, of course, is the primary reason I wont buy an auto.
So if they drop the standard shift from the next Maxima, I certainly wont be buying one.
But for mom, it's perfect. And after one day she loves the car. I was following her in my Maxima, and she was actually pushing it a little around a couple turns! She is always on me about how fast I take corners, so it was funny to see her doing it. She loves the power too.
Add another believer to the list...

Gee, I'm surprised punkdork isn't up here telling you to get your Mom hooked up with a FSTB and RSB!
All kidding aside, get your Mom hooked up with a FSTB and RSB! She'll love it.
Hmmm... oh no, I've become the
's henchman!

My mom wouldnt know a FSTB from a PBSJ
The only upgrade she wants for her car is the hands-free speakerphone kit (which I also have-ever to try to talk on the phone while making a 1-2 shift?)
By the way, to you 2001 guys: what's the deal with the max a/c on the left of the temp slider? We were driving for about 10 min before I realized the a/c was on. Gotta be the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The recirc button is max a/c. Did they start putting dual-stage compressors in the the Maxima?
