Speeding ticket
Speeding ticket
got a speeding ticket i am 18 years old and i was going 14 over so the price is 155.50 for the infraction. Should i go to school so my insurance stays the same or should i just suck it up and pay, how many times can you go to school in your lifetime, ?
you should go to school, you won't get any points on your license if you do so, so your insurance won't go up. I believe that you can go to driving school once every 2 years to get rid of points on your license, however i think it also depends on the state you're in.

if I was you, I'll try to fight it, get a lawyer or do it urself cause the insurance company are still killing me for a speeding ticket which was almost 3 years ago, they said it take 40 months for it to go off their record...bastards.....but then again ur in FL so its cheaper out there..
go to school, don't fight it. you ara only 18 and the judge will laugh at you.. and you will spend mote money in the process... take a few snacks with you and enjoy the most boring class you will eve attend......

At 14 over, that's probably 2 points. If it is two points, call your insurance company and ask them if they will overcharge you for two points. I know a few companies don't charge you for your first 2 points, but as soon as you get a third, they count them all.
I agree with the do it online. I am 19 years old and have taken the 4 hour course twice. Pruizgarcia is right, once a year and 5 times in your lifetime is the limit on the course. Course mostly covers driving laws, signs etc..
ok well im drunk now so im drowing my sorrows of loseing 155 dolars worth of seepding,, which wasnt worth it, the cop was nice and i was going WAY over , 14 over it was more like 22 over but whatever, he was cool im gonna go to class and do whatever else, its my fault and i have no excuse to fight , i was speeding regardless. thanks tho, there goes one of my weekends or workouts! damn!
I don't know if this applies across the board, but from my experience, school doesn't help. About 4 years ago I got a ticket, went to driving school, and my insurance still went up. I asked my insurance agent about it (he's a family friend) and he told me that that Allstate will find out anyway. According to him, even though it doesn't go on your driving record per se, there is still a record of it. He said Allstate (and most other insurance companies, especially State Farm) have people combing these records about every six months and they will find it. This practice, according to him, was actually implemented BECAUSE people were trying to hide their tickets.
Now obviously others are recommending driving school, so perhaps there are different regulations as far as state to state record keeping goes...or perhaps there is another reason why theirs was not affected, but mine was. Either way, I would check with my agent to see if it is even going to help from an insurance standpoint, so that you don't waste your time if it's not going to help; because it's going to cost about the same, if not more than the ticket.
My agent told me that his only recommendation for driving school is when you get several tickets and you are trying to keep you points down.

in my case i had one speeding ticket that i sent in not guilty and then got another one 14 months later which i also sent in not guilty. went to court another two months later and was able to get them both down to tailgating. and by that time the points from the first one already dropped from my record since it was over a year ago that i got the ticket and i was able to get rid of the other points by taking a defensive drivers class.
oh and yes i believe it's every 2 years you can take it. here in NY it removed 4 points from your license and gives you a 10% decrease on your insurance rates. i highly recommend it. it was probably the most boring 6 hours of my life but i save over $200 a year now.

I am from Tampa. Pay the ticket on time, go to online driving school (EASY STUFF) and then your insurance can't go up (by law) and your points are exponged. There are no shady lawyers I could find to make my ticket go away for me ...
They even give you a discount off your ticket if you choose school. Then ... SLOW DOWN. Get that ticket on the Veterans?

Varies from state to state. In TX you can take DD once a year with no lifetime limit, either to reduce insurance premiums or to keep a ticket off your driving record, or both. Also, in TX, insurance companies are not notified of speeding tickets until a plea of Guilty is entered in the court system and you have not exercised either deferred adjudication or driving school options. It is also not entered on your driving record unless you don't do deferred/school.
With Defensive Driving you usually have to pay the cost of the fine + court costs, or just court costs + the "school" fee. With Deferred you usually just pay the full amount of the ticket up front then if you don't get another ticket in the same city for 90 days it is not entered into your driving record.

Another option is to go for Deferred Adjudication. It's basically a "I know i did wrong, but if i promise not to get any tickets for 90 days, i come back to court and let you know and my record is wiped clean."
That leaves you with DD on your shoulder for when you just happen to speed again in the same year.

Wow, I've seen some pretty wild replies on this thread. Having had some experience with this kind of thing (!), let me set the record straight:
1. Take the course, and do it online. Takes a lot less time, and you can do it at home one section at a time.
2. The course keeps it off insurance, but does NOT keep points off your license. This new rule was instituted last year.
3. You can take the course once a year max, but there's no lifetime limit to how many times you take it. But, of course, if you go over five points in three (?) years, your license is suspended. If you get one speeding ticket for >10% over the limit per year, you'll blow through your total.
4. Anything else? Oh yeah, DO NOT call your insurance company and ask if they'll charge for a speeding ticket. Let them find out for themselves, and don't forget that the school keeps it off your insurance record. If you ask, there's likely to be only one correct answer (yes...).
5. BTW, (and this sounds like a contradiction but isn't), use your certificate of completion to reduce your liability insurance by 10%. All insurance companies in Texas do this, and it doesn't get added to your record.
Good luck!

What people get confused with is the term "points". The gov't has their point system and your insurance company has another (and my insurance company has another, and your unlce's insurance company has ANOTHER). They penalize you for mostly the same things, but to different degrees sometimes. This is why DMV points to not necessarily translate to insurance points (non-moving violations and some obscure moving violations), and vice versa (accident seen as your fault, but no gov't ticket issued).

Pay the reduced fine, sign up for traffic school, take the traffic school and present proof of completion to Circuit Court. No DMV points, no insurance points. I just went through this like 5 weeks ago in Tampa - but mine was on 275.
