Well last night my co-worker was dropping me off to pick up my car. He drives a 98 Cobra. After I picked up the car we had the luck of lining up at a red light side by side. I put my window down and asked if he wanted to race from the light to see how our cars compared. Sure enough he was more than willing. But for whatever reason he jumped the light ( He took off before the light turned green) and took the lead. As I saw him sped off I said $hit and popped the clutch and dropped the hammer, next was massive wheel spin.
Finally the car hooked and we we're racing onto the highway.Lucky for me we were heading to the same part of town (same exit)
We finally get off the highway and lined up at another set of lights. This time I was ready. As soon as the lights changed we both took off. First gear was even. Second gear he pulled about a half car ahead of me. At this point I was nearing my redline in 2nd and knew I had to shift fast or I was going to lose. When I shifted into 3rd gear the gap was closed and we we're neck to neck again. And at this point we both backed off because we were doing 70mph in a 30mph zone at 1 am. Needless to say he was shocked that my car kept up with his. Honestly so was I.

 

so, at what point did you spray? I presume that's why you are bottle fed!!

 

I didn't spray thats the significance. I don't drive around town with my bottle valve open and I don't have a remote bottle opener. Let's just say had I sprayed he would of been......

 

whoa, sound like the svt driver needs some serious lessons on how to drive. I had a 98 cobra myself and that thing would eat my 2k1 5 spd max no question.

 

Maybe he had the e-brake on????

or was it one of those 4-cylinder cobras?? :-)

I have to agree with freeze00. Those Cobra's are damn fast. I raced my friends 2k GT Mustang and had my A$$ handed to me. My friends GT has nothing close to the power of a Cobra.. Are you sure he didn't forget to take his emergency brake off? No hard feelings, but a Cobra?

 

I'm just waiting for someone to photoshop some VW wood onto a cobra!!

That just goes to show you. Anyone can lose in a faster car! The dude probably didn't know how to drive. If it had been somebody halfway decent behind the wheel of that stang, sorry, but you would've gotten your a$$ handed to you. But you didn't, and we can add another check in the "W" column for the Maxima!!!!

98 cobra's are just a tiny bit faster (i think .2 secs or so) than 98 gt mustangs (remember, 98 is the last generation mustang)...i tied a friend of mine all the time (except off the line) and he has a 98 gt 5spd...a well driven max can keep up w/ a mustang svt if the mustang driver isn't that great...those of you mustang people...the stang has massive torque so you feel like you are going a lot faster

 

I don't understand how a '98 mustang is just a little bit slower than a '98 Cobra? 1998 Cobra 305 HP 0-60, 5.4. / 1998 Mustang 225 HP 0-60 6.4-6.8.???????

Seems like you're the only one that's well educated. For those who think I can't keep up with a SVT Cobra oh well that's your opinion. If you own a Cobra and live in New England and want to be proven wrong, I'll meet you at New England Dragway any day. And to whoever else thinks a Cobra can hand my a$$ to me well let me flip my nitrous on and see who gets their a$$ handed to them.

i like when people talk about racing mustangs so i guess i will throw my 2 cents in. i have 2kmaxima and i am proud to say that i have a kick *** car<---just thought i'd put that in there but i have raced many of mustangs and they do have a really good jump on us through 1st gear but after that its pretty much butter from there. especially when we get into 4th and 5th gear but most mustang drivers always seem to puss out by then because by then your really going fast and there used to that light to light racing but anyways the truth is top end all mustangs are dead.......

p.s. i have nos also but i really have never used it in a race yet ,but it is quiet fun..

The DOHC 96+ Cobra is very undergeared for it powerband. The car comes with a 3.27 gear, but the car weighs near 3400lbs and has a high hp and tq band which means the stock gearing makes the car inconsistent on launch. The Cobra is very tricky to launch right which means that if you fluff the launch just a little (too much bog or spin), the high 13/low 14 second Cobra becomes a mid 14 second or higher Cobra. It's as simple as that. That's why you were able to hang with the guy. Take it to the track, with no NOS, and I am certain you will get burned. If I remember correctly, there is a guy in New England that ran a 13.4@104mph in his stock 98 Cobra. I doubt your NOS shot could hang with that stock Cobra. If you come up against a Cobra with a set of 4.10-4.30 gears, it will be lights out for you.

What is your timeslip info, with and/or without the bottle?

 

You'd be right if you had said this about 99+GTs and 99+Cobras. As for 98GTs and 98 Cobras, the difference is near a full second (0.8-0.9sec), and we're talking 5-speeds. This near one second difference is also true for the 96 and 97 models.

 

99+GTs give up 45-60 horsepower to 96+ Cobras, but their times are very close in stock form. Stock 99+GT is 14.1sec@99mph, stock 96-98 Cobra is 14.0sec@100mph, stock 99+Cobra is 13.9@101mphsec.

With my mods, I have run my 99GT 13.46sec@102.3mph. A similar equipped Cobra will run about a 13.0sec because the 4V responds better than the 2V when adding the same mods.

 

You are probably right about getting burned running without NOS.Just compare the stats both cars weigh over 3,000 lbs the Cobra has 305hp and the Max has 227hp. So obviously in theory the Cobra should win everytime. However in REAL life situations especially on the streets many things plays a factor in racing, so anythings possible (AS I have proved hanging with athe Cobra). I don't know about me not being able to hang with that Cobra while on NOS ( we'll have to see after I get my high flow fuel pump in and spray a 100-110 shot.
And as for a Cobra with 4.10-4.30 gears I'll just race him on the highway to 140mph and we'll see who tachs out first.

 

Don't be mislead by the deep 4.10-4.30 gear ratio. The DOHC 4.6 makes power to about 6600 rpms with a 7000rpm redline. Overall, a Cobra with 4.10s is geared pretty much like a 4th-5th gen Max. A stock Cobra can hit 152mph and that's in 4th gear. With a 4.10 gears, the Cobra tops out in 5th and the extra torque multiplication gives it the ability to top out over 155mph.

Dave is hitting everything right on the head. Cobras do reach beyond the 155mph mark with the proper gearing of 4.10s. I have ran my GT to 148 and 150 repectively with 3.73s at 5000rpm in 5th. With the stock 3.27 gearing, the best was 140 at redline (6200rpm) in 4th. 5th could not overcome the wind resistance.

 

I'm not positive on this but isn't the more horsepower you have the higher the top speed? I thought torque was what gave you a faster 0-60. I was always taught that torque made you quick and horsepower made you fast. But oh well I could be wrong.
And as for the Cobra with 4.10 gears running 155 mph I won't argue your point because I never had a Mustang and I'm pretty sure I won't ever own one but I'll respect your experience. However I must also believe in what I know and have experienced. For example back 2 summers ago when my friend had a 95 Supra TT with no mods raced a Mustang GT with GT40 heads and a Procharger on the highway. They both raced from 60 mph. Obviously the Mustang had a bit more pull BUT only to 100mph and thats when my friend's Supra passed him like a rocket all the way up to 130mph when we let up on the gas cause there was no way he could catch up.
Reason I know his car had GT40 heads and a Procharger was because we bumped into him at the dragstrip and checked out his car. Then we asked him about his mods. He also admitted one thing and that was the fact that they we're two TOTALLY different machines. His car ran a 12.8 followed by a 12.2 that day at the track so needless to say his car had power but for whatever reason the power just wasn't there on the highway.

 

I asked a few threads ago what times have you run. Do you have a timeslip?

It would take a low 14 to have any chance against a bone stock (and that's very rare) Cobra!
