Changing Spring Yourself

Whats up I was wondering if anyone has changed their springs without a compressor? Someone was telling me they will fly off with a lot of pressure and u could get hurt, another friend with a honda changed his and he just aimed them at the grass and they just pop off? Someone who knows please tell me. Thanks

I would rent a spring compressor from AutoZone, to get the OEM spring off. Most aftermarket springs I installed on Maximas- 4th gen that is, don't even need spring compressors to put them back on.

what? ive never heard that. aim the springs to the grass. why dont you try and post some pics afterwrds?
j/k, you def need compressor or someone is seriously gonna get hurt. ive never seen this happend but this is what everyone tells me. so why risk it? unless you live your life looking for cheap thrills. i wouldnt recommend it. if you cant rent tools, just get them from ebay for 15 bucks. thats what i did since my area is ghey and they dont want to rent tools...

yeah... uh... use a spring compressor.

here...

and here... (for your question about the drop)

autozone/kragen's rents for free where i live. you just pay for a a loaner, return it in similar condition, and they give you full refund.

well, since you obviously know so much more than those of us who actually HAVE aftermarket springs on our maximas (and installed them ourselves), then why did you ask the question in the first place?

so go ahead on take em off without a compressor while you're at it, and let us know how your reconstructive face surgery goes.

like I said, if you already know everything, why the hell did you ask the question, dumba@@? Don't come in here, ask a question, and then get pissed off when people don't tell you what you want to hear.

....anything can be done without the right tools, but to do it safely, correctly, and effectively, it is preferable to use the correct tools and methods.

if you want to do it without a spring compressor, just f-cking do it then. If you want to do it right, go down to an auto parts store and check out a loaner spring compressor.

you don't need a spring compressor, it's mainly for safety reasons.Seriously whose going to aim the strut assembly at their face? Just place your strut assembly between your rims. Most aftermarket springs don't need a spring compressor, but if you get maxspeeds or eibachs which don't lower much you might need one or have someone really strong push it down.

again, not a matter of if it can be done that way, but a matter of is it safer to do it with a compressor....

more safety > less safety ALWAYS.

why try and do it with the posibility of failing when you can just get the compressor. i just did mine a month ago and i paid $45 for a compressor at pepboys. returned it and i got my money back. it's not a trick. that's how you do it. you're pretty much paying as an insurance that they'll get it back. you have 30 days to return it.

I dropped the front driver's side my car without a spring compressor, but I wouldn't recommend it. The stock spring was compressed tremendously, and I placed the bottom of the strut against the wall in the garage and the top end towards the garage door opening. The top mount literally shot out of the garage. After I reassembled it, I put the Maxspeed spring/strut back in the car and went to Autozone to get a spring compressor right away to drop the rest of the car. I have lowered more than 20 cars (mostly Hondas) without a spring compressor, due to laziness, but after that incident, it has taught me to always use one.

On a side note, I don't ever recall ever having to use a spring compressor to reinstall a lowering spring back onto the struts. I weigh 145lb, and my weight is enough to compress the spring in order to put the top mount back on.

Where's housecor when you need him? As many times as he has changed out the suspension on his car, I'm going to assume he would not recommend doing this without the proper tools. As I will do also. You are just asking for a serious mishap and possible injury, but if you "can" do it, then I hope your medical insurance is paid.
