Question Rear Bumper and P0440 - EVAP Small Leak

Hi all,

My SES is throwing me a P0440 - EVAP small leak - I realize that the most common reason for this SES code is the fluctuation of the pressure in the gas tank, and gas cap not being screwed in/sealed correclty. I have re-sealed the gas cap with silicone, and reset my ECU, but the SES comes back. The SES threw this code recently, just after I have some body work done. The rear bumper was removed. Sooo.....My question is.. Can the sensor that throws this code be damaged because of a rear bumper removal. I would go back to the body shop and ask them to cover the costs of a new sensor if in fact this sensor was nicked/damaged due to a rear bumper removal.

Thanks for all your help....

I would think not. In all honesty, your gas cap may simply be cross-threaded...

Take it to the body shop.
EVAP canister on the Maxima sits right on the LEFT corner of the car- in the back. Its bout 2 inches away from the bumper cover and usually sustains damage in a accident. Most body shops do not repleace this item as it saves them bout 500 dollars, and they get to keep this $$$. I posted pics of the EVAP canister not too long ago for a ORG memeber who got his car back from the body shop and had the same problems.

GAS CAP is NOT your problem, it could be a few things that are messed up- but since you just got the car back from a rear end collision I am almost positive you need a 450 dollar Evaporative Emissions Canister- aka EVAP canister.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I will certainly take it back and speak with the body shop
