Vibration Vibration Vibration

AS the topic says.... I'm going to have the car align and balance in the morning. If the car continues to vibrate what else can I look for. The car only vobrates between 65 and 75. I wil ask the shop to check the rims......

Thanks

maybe bad lower ball joints. put your car on a lift and wiggle the wheels, if there is PLAY, you need new ball joints, this can cause vibration on certain roads. although this isn't very common, you can still check to make sure. hope that helps

It's always useful to do a rotation and see if it changes the vibration any. That can help you at least isolate it to tires/rim or something in the alignment/suspension.

make sure the hub-centric rings are the correct bore. i believe 66.1 is the correct size. it can also be a slight bend in the rim. take it to a different shop to get them balanced and ask them if any of them are bent...

Tires?

What kind of tires are you using? When I put Falken's on my car I had the same problem. When I switched to Turanza's the vibration went away.

Wow, same thing here except I still have the Falkens. The Potenzas sucked, but they didn't vibrate. I would hate to think it's just because of the tires.

I had same issue with mine...Two of my tires have whats called "Cold Spots" or little air bumps that result from leaving the tire on a side for long periods of time. ANyway, I put the worst (as far as severity of cold spot) on the back and the best on the front and it eliminated my problem. Thats what probably happening to you. This took me like 5 hrs to figure out with my shop.

to check cold spots, u need to put a car on a lift and turn the wheel fast with your hand then put a pen like 2 cm away from the tread and hold is real steady and look to see if the disctance changes between the tread and tire. If it does then u got cold spots and thats whats causing your problem.

When front tire balance is off, steering wheel shakes. When rear tire balance is off, car vibrates. This has happened to me on other cars. Another thing that I have had was a broken belt on a tire. Everything acts just like the balance problem but the spin balance machine doesn't "see" it (but it can be seen visually while on the spin balancer).

Did the vibrating start soon after getting the Falkens? It took a few days after having the Falkens on my car for me to notice the vibrating. I have nothing but good things to say about the Turanza LS-V's, they blow away the Potenza in all driving conditions and aren't that expensive.

yea my steering wheel shakes heavily when braking over 60 mph. I'm sure my rotors are shot but wonder if its something else as well. My tires are rotational tires (michelin)

what shop u guys recommend going to that can look for the problem before spending the money?

If it's when breaking not cruising than it's warped rotors.

I had the same symptoms. It was my right front wheel bearing. It was replaced under warranty, after trying three dealers that said they couldn't find the problem, And the total including tax and labor was $231. That price was from the dealer. I ended up paying nothing. I have never gone anywhere else for warranty work. My extended warranty has paid for itself once again.

Let us know what the problem was.

Same problem with me. I did the following and the vibration is still there:

- Stock tires were replaced with Falkens and balanced with Hunter 9700 and Roadforce. Vibration was still there.
- Falkens were replaced after 400 miles with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Hunter9700/Roadforce balanced but vibration was still there.
- Align the car. No change, vibration still there.
- Replaced both front wheel bearings. Cost with another alignment, $350. NO CHANGE, vibration still there.

According to another member, Galo, who is also going through similar issues, it could be a Rack and Pinion (Steering Rack) adjustment issue that can cause vibrations. There is a TSB out for the 4th gen. that addresses wably steering wheel, pulling and vibration issues on late 4th gen cars. The same rack is used until 2002, if I remember correcly, and we could have the same issues in our cars.

What Galo did to remediate the problem was to do an "on-car" wheel balancing. On-car wb is a method of balancing your wheels when the wheels are on the car. Due to other factors, like axles and steering components, the car can continue to vibrate even if your wheels are completely balanced. The on-car wb can fix vibration issues when standard wheel balancing does not work.
The shops that do on-car wb are hard to find, so good luck.

where did u do balance, i got my wheels balanced at NTB and it was worthless, they balanced 3 times and still vibrated. i got a refund, went to Discount Tire who forced balanced, took tire off, rotated it on the wheel, forced balanced again and fied my vibration. Force balancing is the best way to do it by far. Hope this helps beucase I was going crazy trying to figure it out..

Same whole car vibration here... The steering wheel shimmy and vibration coming up the seat at speeds over 50mph... It's annoying as hell!! Falkens here too. I think I'm gonna ask the shop to redo the balancing during the next tire rotation before trying anything else...

In my experience it has been one of the following: tires (I had this happen on almost brand new Michelins - got them replaced for free after complaining to Michelin), bad balancing (the balancing machine out of calibration), warped rims (make sure they are always torqued to 100 in-lbs) and a dead strut...

First off, it cannot be bent rims, if it was bent rims that the wheel would shake at ALL SPEEDS. (Warped rims don’t exist; it’s an oxy moron term). Bearings could be possibility for vibration but when you do an alignment, they will b able to check those. Most places to basic balancing which does not do a good job on fixing shimmy/vibration especially if you have summer tires or high performance tires. The beauty of force balancing which im sure is available at other places besides direct tire is that it rotates the wheel to about 60MPH and using a laser measures all the lumps, cold spots, flat spots of the tire and is able to tell you where to move the tire along the wheel in order to minimize those lumps. The one crappy thing I have learned is that if you have a bent rim and you drive on it, the wheel imprints the bend on the tire making it un fixable. If that happens no machine in the world can fix it. This post comes after spending 5 hours fixing my tires and talking to people who have worked with tires for decades..

Has anyone checked the front end for worn out parts? I hear the inner tie rod ends that connect to the rack and pinion can get bad as well as the ball joints or lower control arm bushings. That will also cause vibration...

Hi guys. I dont know if I hae the same problems you desrcibe. But lately my steering wheel shakes/vibrates at high speeds. I just got all new tires Turanza LV-V and had them balanced. Thing is that if I place my hand on the steering wheel you can actually see my hand moves slightly from side to side because of th evibration on the steering wheel. Its not bad at all its just wieerd because it feel slike the car is falling apart if the wheel is so sensitive to the road. What do you guys thinkis this normal?

I had the same problem with a 99 Maxima. The third shop I brought it to in 3 years balanced the tires and the vibration went away. The funny thing is that my tire shop said they did a rebalance too.
