Bottom Line
Honestly, I was in the market for a 4th gen at the end of my Acura's life. When I saw spy shots and specs for the 5th gen, I waited and bought the 5th gen. Now it's come full circle again, and will probably never end ...
This my second max. I traded in my 98SE for a 2KSE. I knew about the 5th gen. coming out when i bought the 98se. But i did not know about the 260hp max in 02. So i probably would have waited if i had to do it all over again. I would never consider buying a ALTIMA.

Absolutely...
If I played that "if you knew then what you knew now" game, I would never buy an f'ing car. There will always be something better next year and, if you have the means, feel free to trade up to it...or just be happy that you got a good car and hang with it. Reality of the enthusiast's world!
At the time I was shopping around for my Maxima I already knew the Altima was going to be redesigned (I think I read it from Motor Trend's website) with a much more powerful engine. I even asked a few Nissan salespeople about it and they confirmed that information.
But I still bought an '01 SE anyway. Reasons included:
1) The Maxima will always be known as Nissan's best by the general public regardless of what happens with its other models. Enthusiasts might think otherwise for the 2002 model year, but most others will not as they tend to be influenced by marketing, salespeople, and past reputations.
2) It offered the best price/performance ratio for what I wanted to pay.
3) I don't really worry about resale value as I intend to keep my cars until their very end of lives when they'll be worth virtually nothing anyway.
I bought the best car for me for that period of time and I don't think I'll ever look back. I love my Maxima!

No regrets...needed a new car... loved the 5th gen. redesign & the extra 32 ponies under the hood...
It's like buying a computer...if you wait to buy the latest one with all the bells & whistles, you'll always be waiting...
Absolutely no remorse, especially in my choice of GLE Sterling Mist with frost leather interior...one year old & still gets raves everywhere...
