100+ k mile 5.5gen

I was pondering a purchase of a 5.5gen with 105k on the odometer. Assuming the price was right <$10k could this be a worthwhile purchase? Does anyone know how these cars hold up at that kind of milage ie. should I be scared of the milage? Any insight or comments would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: the car has an auto tranny - possible reliability issues?

Talk to org member GBAUER as he has the highest mileage 5.5th gen here. I've read two posts on here including him that had to get their tranny replaced up around 100K miles. I've put a lot of miles on my 03 Max, about 50K in two years and I haven't had any major problems with it. The VQ engine is bulletproof as long as it's well maintained, can't say that about the tranny.

I know I'm new here, but I am a mechanic.(not Nissan) The one thing I would be concerned about with mileage accumulated that quickly is how much regular servicing was skipped. Get a service history. Other than that, I always buy high mile cars.

If it was serviced regularly throughout the miles at regular intervals, there should be nothing wrong with it. A Nissan, especially a Max, should easily last 200k+ miles. There have been members on the Org with 300k+ miles on their Maximas.

Wait for something with lower mileage comes along and save a bit more .

Thanx everyone for your input. I've decided to hold out a bit more, see how much I can save up in the next couple of months. I find that milage is not always representative of the car's actual mechanical condition; vehicle age has to be factored in as well. What is a better buy and an overall better car - a '98 with 25k or a '03 with 105k? Same price of course.

i would get an 03 with higher miles. much better car, imo. plus i got a 99 camry with 140k on it, runs like a champ. i'v always done regular maintanance since day 1 on it. japanese cars should run 200-300k w/o problems if properly maintained. the one thing i would look out for is the suspension components. i found out that they wear out and the ride is not nearly as nice with higher milage vehicles. but this is fairly cheap to replace.

kobalt-your sig says that you're driving 2000 GXE.

99% it is impossible to get all the driving history. You were not sitting next to the driver to see if he abused the car for 105k mi. Maximas may last 300k mi but there's no guarantee that your Maxima will be as reliable. No matter what the make is, after 100k mi cars typically start to fall apart, requiring $$ maintenance..suspension components, exhaust, rotors, alternator, radiator, water pump, injectors, sensors, etc. At the same time, while 25K may seem like a perfect mileage, but there's no way to tell if the odo was rolled back, and 1998 is a 7 yr old car! Why not use a simple rule of thumb of 12-15K mi per year, and find a 1999 with 75-85K mi or 2002 with 35-45k mi.

I'm the guy with 114k on my '03. So far: replaced tranny at 103k. Leaks about a quart of oil every 1000 miles (blow by. Needs new piston rings). had to replace fan for A/C. A/C control module needs to be replaced (got inside and glued it back together for the time being). Other than that, the paint and stock fogs blow. However, even though this is against the rules to post, I smoked a Porsche Boxter at 140 mph on Wednesday (not on a track...). He was pissed. I definitly recommend a 5.5 gen, just get a lower milage version and be sure to find one with all the goodies. You'll want 'em!

Its a long story I don't have the max since October last year Right now I am driving a 98 Seville with 55k and it's literally falling apart. I wanted to go back to Nissan, but skip the 5th gen since I want an auto - I heard that despite having more power up top, the 5th a bit less low end compared to the 4th gen. But lurking around the board and hearing of the impressive power the vq35 puts down is tempting me to get the 5.5 gen Perhaps the nature of my questions seems more clear now.

I dunno about the 4th gen, but the torque from the 3.5 puts a grin on my face everytime I mash the pedal.

When did you buy the car? You must use it for work or don't have a home or something to put 114K on it so fast. I have slightly more than 1/2 that mileage on my 95SE, which I know is at the other extreme, but just the same
that's a lot of miles in so little time.

GBAUER: That's one sexy Maxima! She does not look a bit over 14k! Who would know?

Just to clarify - Im not trying to knock the vq30-k Maxes - I killed plenty of Mustangs and such with my 5speed. But I have to share the car with my gf and she won't have anything to do with a manual.

I just bought an off lease 2002 SE Platinum Edition 6 speed with 141000Km (aprox 88k miles). Mechanically the car is flawless except for one belt which need to be changed. I just pulled the plugs this past weekend and they were in perfect condition, i assume they were still OEM because of the arcing build-up on the ground terminal. However, as others are saying, around 100k is when the more expensive maintained tends to be required. In my case I needed tires immediately, the original potenzas were quite bald. and i also recently pulled a P0138 for a sluggish O2 sensor. But on the bright side, when you have a relatively young car with lots of miles on it you can easily assume that most of them are highway miles. btw i paid 15k cdn for it in January.

So they got 141,000 km on the original impotenzas?? Wow . Mine have a little tread left with 60,000km on them and I thought I was doing well. I might make 80,000 - 90,000 but no more.

Did your 2K2 have leather? I have a 2K2 6-speed with leather and about 85,000 km and I am wondering what it's worth?

Back on topic - my 2K2 is not really too close to the 100K mile mark but at about 55,000 miles it is mechanically excellent and I am not sure it has ever ran better. I wish I could say the same for the paint on the outside........

My 2K2 is awesome, imo. I paid 16K for it. It had 49,ooo miles, and every service receipt ever was in the glove compartment. The last owner also told me it has nothing but 93 Octane since the pulled it out of the showroom. It was/is garage kept so everything from the wiper arms to the moldings all around are solid black, with no water spots ect and the paint is suprisingly perfect.

16K can buy you a new Sentra presently, so I look at the deal I got as a god send

I have around 57K on it now, and am going to get the tranny serviced very soon. I haven't had any slip but I do think I've got a bad knock sensor or something because from time to time I can hear a little pinging. Other then that little infraction against my ego, she is perfect.

Am I the only one concerned about this? How expensive is that to repair?

I have as 1995SE with a VQ35 in it. The engine has 56,000 km (33,000 miles) so I'm not sure about the VQ35's reliability yet. I know my old VQ30 had 116k miles on it and never burnt any oil.

56,000 km is 34,798 miles, JClaw, not 33,000.

Long story...had to let it go...

For instance

- Oil change: $178
- Transmission on convertible top :$1853

You see where I'm going.
