Under full throttle acceleration, my trans shifts way too early for my tastes. The 1-2 upshift at about 6000rpm and the 2-3 upshift at 5800 rpm. Is that normal?

I could shift it manually, but the darn auto shifts so slow that if I shift at 6000 rpm it sometimes hits the 6600rpm rev limiter before it decides to shift. This short shifting it getting really annoying. I should have got the 5-spd.

You could turn OD off, which will lock out 4th gear

1-2 upshift occurs at 5800
2-3 upshift occurs at 6000
with overdrive off

Where is peak torque again? I want to ensure I am using all of it.

At least the shifts are nice and crisp with the new transmission solenoids.
I never got the TCM replaced. Would this help raise the shift points?

I doubt it......until someone comes out with an ECU or TCM that changes the shift points, I'll stick with manually shifting it when needed...

I don't usually manually upshift, but when I do it's around 6100. There are times I've hit the rev limiter shifting at 6100... I hope boost will bring me closer to the magical 6600 mark.

how would more hp change the shift points?

10lbs of boost...hmmmm....maybe it will put you at 7k rpm
Hehehe... nah, I don't think that will happen, but I'm hoping it will.

Once in a while, I see my car shift at about 6300 when I take it hard from a stop. Weird but true.

It doesn't happen often though. You might even blow something under the hood before it happens.

Two things I hate: The tranny shifting too soon, then I manual shift it and hit rev limiter which makes a horrible clunk into second because of the delay in shift.

Second when I take off from a stop light my wheels start to spin in a little gravel and the traction control kicks in and kills the engine.....so I look like I just stalled my car although I drive an auto.

Ah, now I am glad I got the VLSD, not the traction control.

I just get a lot of screeching tire noise when taking off. Not effective for what I am usually trying to do.
Guess I need to learn how to launch properly.

Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. At least I now know that I'm not alone. It sounds like one of those things we're just gonna have to deal with. It's such a shame because minus the trans, this car is phenomenal in every way. If I end up selling the car prematurely, it will be because I can't deal with this lame auto anymore.

HMMMMMM............

for some reason i never hit the rev limiter *knock on wood*, i have an auto and i do a manual shift a lot and turn off my tcs but and wait till i hit 6500 rpm exact before i shift, but my engine shift right away and i never hit the rev limiter...hmmmm, am i just lucky? i wish the max was a rwd, it'll take off so much nicer than wat it's capable of doin.

Postive? The rev limiter will knock your rpm's down and make you think you've shifted. The car will somewhat jerk also.

Because our cars have a 4spd auto, the gearing is so widely spaced that it is critical to take advantage of every bit of RPM we have available in every gear. Earlier someone was asking for dyno results to see our torque peak. You can find my dyno results at:

http://www.desertpearlmax.homestead....noResults.html

But knowing these curves for our car is irrelevant. The gearing is soooo widely spaced that the shape of the torque is not relevant in calculating shift points.

There is a noticable difference in power in the next gear when I manually shift to second or third, the 500 rpm helps.

Does anyone notice the max is a dog anywhere above 80mph? My SHO would kill my max above 80mph

Not really, but I do notice it won't downshift to 2nd at that speed (duh! ).

Thanks to my Supercharger . . . .

My 2K max now will upshift from 1-2 at 6500-6600 rpm. I can't really explain it but maybe its because the rpms rev up so quickly when I reach boost levels that the ECU isn't able to shift quickly enough, thus the 6500-6600 rpm shift point. Prior to the SCer install my car also shifted around 6000-6100 rpm from the 1-2 upshift. I also noticed that my max was somewhat of a dog above 80 mph but since adding the SCer and the y-pipe it really pulls hard and quickly to 120 mph. I'm wondering what type of throttle response I will get at highway speeds after I have my high stall torque converter installed next tuesday.

DMAN, you have one bad a*s car.....I need a SC. After driving my buddies GS400 for three days, my max feels like a slow POS!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm going to take some pics of my car, engine bay, instrument cluster with boost gauge, tranny cooler, and try to have them up on my new maxima page sometime this weekend or beginning of next week. Back in January I was at a maxima meet in Austin, TX and I got to take a ride in a modified GS400 (high flow cone intake, exhaust, and high performance computer chip. It was sweet especially when he floored it at 70 mph and makes me wish Nissan gave our cars a 5 speed automatic instead of a 4 speed auto. Anyway I also gave the guy a ride in my car and he said that he thought it would be a real close race between our cars and thought that my car might just out pull his modded GS400. Unfortunately we never got to race each other because it started raining but I appreciated his comments. Take care.

It shifts into third at about 80 and the gearing is so tall, and so widely spaced that it not only has a tough time pulling the taller gear...but it's also out of the powerband when trying to do so.

Immagine if this car had a 6-speed...It would fricken fly!!!

Shifting into 3rd at 70mph slows down the car alot. 1st and 2nd gear is to close. 3rd is to tall and 4th is tall and it freguently has to downshift to get any passing power unless you are already cruising at 70mph when it is near its "sweet" spot at 2,550rpms. My shift points 1-2shifts are at 5,950rpms. 2-3shifts are at 6,200rpms. 3-4shifts happen at 6,200rpms. This car is god slow in 4th gear.

Desert Pearl, Just enjoy that beautiful AE. It looks so sweeet.
