quick 5 speed question

i have a 2k 5 speed that i bought back in november. i got the warranty with it that covers me up to 24,000 miles after the purchase of the vehicle. my question is that my 5 speed is messed up pretty bad. seems like the syncros won't line up, it'll lock me out of 2nd gear somethimes, grinds almost everytime into 3rd, and the reverse lockout keeps me out of reverse a lot too. i called the dealership and they said that they need to look at it and see if it's abusive driving that has caused these problems. i know that i drive the car hard, but not hard enough to break anything. how can they tell if it's driver error that has messed up everything? just curious. if it's easy to tell if it's driver error then i will have a family friend rebuild my tranny for 600 bucks, but if i can get it done under warranty i only have to pay the 100 deductible. so i guess if anyone is a nissan tech or works in the service department at a dealership, how do you tell what has cause the problem in a tranny? just curious. sorry this wasn't exactly a quick question. thanks for replys

The only way a nissan tech, or any other tech for that matter, can tell if a person has been abusing their transmission is by removing the trans assembly and checking for heat spots on the flywheel, wear patterns on the clutch disc and clutch disc thickness remaining. Many customers that come into my dealership with 350Z's that beat on their cars expect a clutch/tranny for free (in warranty) after like 5k miles. Both the clutch disc and flywheel show excessive heat markings on them from hard/quick engagements. The way you describe what your trans is doing tells me that the syncros have been hammered on for quite some time now. Syncros just don't go bad. It takes a while for them to get the way you have it. If the dealership decides not to warranty it just have your friend rebuild it and while you’re at it get a performance clutch and lightweight flywheel for added hp and torque. good luck. oh, one more thing....you might want to look into a tranny with LSD (limited slip diff) like the 2k1 AE 5SPD.

i dont see why abusive driving would hurt the gearbox at all....
of course it would end up hurting the clutch and flywheel but i dont see why that would at all affect the syncros.
