With new MAF is reprogramming necessarily needed?
With new MAF is reprogramming necessarily needed?
Hi all,
I know there's many posts about the MAF, but I haven't seen anyone comment on whether they waited to have the ECU reprogrammed and whether or not an additional improvement was the result.
I replaced my MAF two weeks ago and am happy with the results. No more hesitation on cold acceleration, smoother shifting, better mpg, etc... but in terms of improved power I can't say that it's been significant. So I'm wondering if the reprogramming may help in that area.
FYI...I've called a couple of dealers and the cost for the reprogramming is around $90-$100.
Thanks,
Doug

good question....im about to replace mine today pr tomorrow, and if i dont see power improvements Im going to be thinking the same thing. Im not sure if when you have the new MAF, the ecu will adapt itself back to how it should be (like how it adapts to a bad MAF)
Some people say No, some Yes, advantages some... not neccesary... but recommended. I'm ordering my MAF today and will do the ECCU rep as soon as I can.....call DaveB he know a lot about this

this, and a similar post about having these results makes me happy. But im setting myself up for major dissapointment this week if its still slow after i put the new one in. Id hate to get the new one for only 79, then have to fork over another $80-100 (guessing) to the dealership for them to press a button and do a 4 minute job
Instil,
If your having similar issues as I and others have you'll still be happy you replaced it. As I said I am happy with the results. My car has been running like crap for over a year until I finally received a p0171 code. Dealer diagnosed as MAF and I replaced it myself rather than pay them a total of 450(85 diagnoses fee + 375 MAF install and ecu upgrade). It's nice to have the car respond properly again when accelerating. I'm just not sure I have the full power back that I used to have. Of course I have 103,000 miles on the car, so that may be part of the reason as well.

$450! id be unhappy if i had no choice but to pay that to have the work done, knowing damn well it costs $79. (probably $17 to them
) yea, my acceleration is virtually non existant compared to when i got it at 18k...now at 52k. Response is poor, and when idling in cold weather, id either had to rev it up to not stall, or the rpms wouldbe steady, then spike up real quick, then fall back to normal...i need to zip around like the good old days

The p0171 code wasn't a definitive MAF code so I had to let the dealer diagnose it. I was going to replace the MAF without getting the dealer's diagnoses, but with multiple things that can cause the p0171 I thought it was worth $85 pinpoint the problem. should try something, so it's up to you whether you think it's worth the 79 gamble.
I want a new car with the lovely "WARRANTY" again....lol. Sooooooooooooon!
