Radar Detector Mounting 02 Max

I have a Whistler Pro-73 on order. I saw one guy who mounted his radar detector in the sunglass holder by the rear view mirror. There is a plastic piece in that cavity that is removable. I was wondering if mounting a radar detector in this spot would hinder performance? I like the idea of it being out of the way and hidden. I also plan on hard wiring it.

I would think that being in that plastic compartment would have to hinder performance. It will also look like junk having the cover off that thing. I clipped mine onto the drivers sun visor right by the garage opener buttons. It's still pretty much hidden from cops looking in the car, but it performs great there.

Mount it on top of the mirror:

I used to have it on the passenger side, but moved it to the driver's side to make it for me easier to see.

when you mount it that high, does the rear facing lens still have an open shot out?

I mounted mine below the mirror down about 4-5 inches and hardwired it into the auto-mirror circuit. It is highly recommended that the detector can have a clean view to the rear window (if you look in the back and can't see your detector cleanly, you need to move it) and that it is not placed above the tint line on your windshield (the little tinted "shade" blue part of the windshield.) I haven't had any trouble with my V1 which is mounted in this fashion.

As long as your detector isn't blocked by metal, performance shouldn't be an issue. Hiding it in the sunglass holder, which is plastic, shouldn't be a problem. Whether or not you have a straight shot out the front windshield is another issue.

You should look at the Beltronic models. They are now under the same ownership as Escort and they seem to be making very good detecters for the price. Plus their cheeper models(besides there express series) have the same performance as there more expensive ones but just have less features. Just stay the hell away from Cobra. I can be right behind some ricer civic with a Cobra and hit him with my radar gun and the thing never even goes off until I pass and get in front of him, then you see them slow way down.

I had cobra, and it was alright. I got the escort 8500 and I love it, its a whole lot better than cobra ( don't remember what model cobra, it was like 130 at best buy when I bought it a couple years ago) The escort is a lot more sensetive than my cobra.

NOT COBRA... Don't waste your money on any other detector besides V1. The beltronics are good, but I recommend you cough up the money and buy a V1.

I have the new Bel Vector 995 and it's awesome. I tried out the new Passport X50 and Valentine 1 a few months ago with the free 30 day trials and I think it worked the best. The Passport was basically same detection but heavier, uglier, and more expensive. The V1 went off WAY too much even when cops weren't around and the arrows just didn't work to my satisfaction and i found myself ignoring it after 2 hours of use altho it was hard bc there is no mute button on the stupid thing so it continually beeps and beeps unless you unplug it. Go with the Bel. Solid product, performance, and price.

The V1 has mute button...just push the volume button in. Also you can adust the mute volume. The arrows really are NICE along with the BOGEY counter...once you get used to using them you can figure out it's awesome. Also, it has different filtering modes to help with false readings (supermarkets, etc). You probably had it on "A" which is NO FILTER. But it's all personal preference....my preference.... VALENTINE ONE

Definitely would throw my vote in on the V1. For one thing the arrows work great for telling you if the signal is in front or behind. I would think I would have to do alot of unnecessary looking around if all it did was just beep. If I have the target is behind me no worries, just a check in the review. Plus I find it very easy to gauge distance and relative threat level by the multi multi level strength meter. Expensive yes but it LITERALLY has saved me so many times in all kinds of situations...I have even seen someone who was tailing me (trying to anyways) down a hill go by me after I got a reading and moved over get nailed. Very entertaining.

It was a toss up for me between the V1 an the Escort 8500 X50. I ended up getting the X50 with the blue led lighting.

I just ordered two Escort Passport's 8500 X 50 Blue's. Spent a good amount of money on two of these ,one for my car and one for my fiance's 05 3.5 Altima. From what I have heard these detector's are worth every penney, time shall tell.

If you guys can post more pics, so I can decide where to put them, that would be appreciated. Just wondering one thing, isnt that standard coiled smartcord annoying looking? Would it be better to get the Direct wire smartcord? Little confused here.

I like my x50. It seems to be significantly more sensitive than my original 8500. I have mine mounted over the mirror. Scroll up to post #3 for pics. And I hardwired it to the mirror using the procedure described here: http://2k2maxima.freewebspace.com/catalog.html

I would just like to also vote for the Valentine; even though this is not a pissing contest to which detector is better. According to the informative manuel that came with the detector you should place it high on the winshield. If you put it behind tint you run the risk of signal interference.
My opinion, as long as the radar has as good of line of sight as the driver, there should be no problem.
The only question I have about Radar Detectors is a heat issue. Mine sits out in the heat all day and even gets too hot to touch. I pray to god This $400+ thing was built to withstand the heat with its metallic casing.

Every windshield made effects laser even if it's not behind the tint. The only radar detector that really detects laser well is the V1. Placing it behind the tint does effect laser sensetivity, but it doesn't effect radar at all.

The Escort X50 has been known to have heat related problems, but it's not widespread. The V1 has never had heat issues. It's been around 100 degrees here in DC for the entire summer and I haven't had any issues with my V1.

Never knew about the Escort. I just know The V1 get blazing hot here in FL. I think that is part of the reason why they used a metallic casing.

Ive got a BEL vector hard wired and mounted just below the rearview. Ive never gotten a radar ticket in the 1.5 years ive owned it. It has outstanding range and I love it.

I mounted it by the rearview because im constantly checking mine. If im driving with the windows down and the music up, I cant always hear it beeping. But i see it flashing. Not to mention the fact that when hard wired, theres no cords running around the inside of the car, and it looks clean.
