Anyone know how to do this?

I bought a Cobra XRS 777 radar detector today and wanna hardwire it in my 02 Maxima. The link in the how-to's doesn't work, so I'm coming here for help. Anyone have a clue, also can I tap in to the power supply for the auto dimming rear view?? Thanks!

Well, the only hardwire I've seen in person is the V1 in my family's Q45. The installer wired the power cable from the engine bay through the firewall to the A-pillar by the sun visors.

I just searched and found instructions for a 6th gen using the power wire for the mirror. Should ours be similar?

get a solder and connects the wires to a power cable, hide the cables and there you go. That's how I have mine.......

You could be a little more descriptive in your subject....

I did this to my 2k maxima. I took the map light unit out and soldered a ground wire and a positive wire that was always on. I have the wire coming out where the rear view mirrror is. I would take a picture, but I'm at work now and don't have my camera. It looks very clean and professional. What's great about doing this is that you can mount the detector just below the rear view mirror and no one notices it is even there. From the front or rear of the car, you don't notice it unless you are looking really hard. Great to protect against theives and you don't have to scramble and pull down and hide a radar detector if you get pulled over. You can't see it unless you poke your head into the car. If you're a cop, you won't see it. Even most passengers won't notice it until they hear it go off.

I don't know anything about the Cobra XRS 777, but last time I checked Cobra didn't really make anything worthwhile. The Escort Passport 8600 is a great radar detector and blows away just about everything out there except the Valentine one and the Bel 985/980. I would stay away from the Cobras. It's better than nothing, but to avoid the road tax, you should have the best (within reason of course).

The Passport 8600 is really easy to wire for. The power cable's connector to the radar detector is a phone cable plug. Makes it really easy for wire jobs such as this with no mess.

Don't worry about power going to the radar detector all the time unless you don't drive your car for a month or so. They use very little power. In fact, there are some cheaper models that are cordless that use 2 AA batteries that last for a month or so. Your car battery has a lot more capacity than 2 AA batteries.

Well, I'm being a little winded here, I hope I helped.

I used this write up to wire my radar detector to my auto dimming mirror.

Thanks guys! This morning I used mailjbrown's write up for a 6th gen. The only difference was the wire to our 5th gen mirrors has 2 wires in it. The end result looks great, and once my car is clean I'll take some pics.

Foobeca I didn't have loads of cash to blow on a radar detector seeing as I'm putting in a new Kenwood deck with Sirius this week. I did my research though and the Cobra XRS 777, aka XRS 9700, is Cobra's top of the line model, and has done pretty well in a couple different tests. It even beat out a couple very expensive detectors in longer range tests. So considering I only paid $120 for it, I'd say I did ok.
