Engine won't go past 2500 rpm

I tried to search a bit but couldn't come up with too much. Real quick, 02 max with a 6sp. Just driving home from work and traffic was stop and go so I moved over to the far right lane and step on it to get off on an earlier exit. Something weird happened and now the car has the equivalent of a rev limiter at 2500 rpms. The engine just cuts power if I hit that on the tech.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

you blew a mass air flow sensor I bet......

upstatemax Jul 20, 2005 03:56 PM

yeah its your mass air sensor...

Luds Jul 20, 2005 03:57 PM

I assume it's fine for me to still drive the car... like to the dealership to get this fixed.

How much does a Mass air sensor run? And how long would this take to fix?

Tek-Niq Jul 20, 2005 04:07 PM

I dunno how much it is, but its a quick replacement... take the old one out and install the new one... 5 minutes tops..

upstatemax Jul 20, 2005 04:09 PM

I know you can get one for my 00' for about $90, last I heard the 02+ were quite a bit more. like $200 range.

Thanks for the help so far guys...

okay, so I went back out there to start it up and pull the car in the garage and I can't keep it running. It fires up and the tach bounces up and down slowly working it's way until it dies. Trying to "give it some gas" does not appear to help.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Your question has been answered. Your MAF needs replacing. If you are still unsure, you can run a diagnostic on it either at Autozone for free or the dealer for a labor charge.

call Dave B for a new MAF...1-888-254-6060

Replace it with a 00-01 maf and you will save a ton of money. A new 5.5 gen maf is about $450. $120 if you can find one in a junk yard.

Thanks...

I agree on the issue, it's just if I can't get the car started I really can't drive to get the part or take it to the dealership. :) I was asking for suggestions on getting it running even if to limp along to the dealership.

the part is expensive as is.... get a ride over and install it yourself... i think is one screw and a clip and the whole MAF assembly comes off... real simple to do so don't waste money on labor on top of the MAF..

Luds Jul 20, 2005 04:53 PM

Thanks for the help...

God that part is expensive. I called around to 3 different stores and only Checker could get it. $280 and it would take 7 days. Gotta be kidding. Anyway, I'll figure something out.

-Thanks

One more question...

where exactly is the MAF?

Thanks

right on the intake... right before the intake maniflod theres a sensor coming out of the shaft, can't miss it...

theres wires going to it, on the intake... you can't miss the assembly.... on the straight part of the intake not the box....

Sorry... not to be an idiot

but where is it relative to the air filter, that might help me. Is it it the thing that is kind of diamond shaped sticking out of the tube just past the air filter?

its closer to the engine... there's a straight pipe going to the engine after the filter box, its mounted there..

yes its sticking out of the tube...

Luds Jul 20, 2005 05:22 PM

Right before you get to the metal pipes? (intake manifold?)

Cuz I have it down to 2 parts. :)
