brake lights don't work

does anyone have a clue why my brake lights might have quite working?

2000 GXE two main brake lights and third light are out. Bulbs look fine. All other lights work properly.

I had my windows tinted a while back could the tinter have done something when removing the third brake light which would cause all of them to fail?

You might want try getting new ones since all your other lights are working

If it were a fuse his side lights wouldn't be working. I assume they are.

hey douchie, the side lights are on the taillight ckt, not the brake light ckt.

the brake lights and brake switch are the only thing on that fuse...

when you assume, you make an *** out of you...

Make sure the bulbs CLICK in place i the sockets. It's a common mistake to be overly gentle with the all glass bulbs.

EDIT: on second thought, since the third light isn't working, you have to have a lose connection somewhere along the way.

or a blown fuse... or a failed brake switch.

Yeap. Test the brake switch using the cruise control. If pressing the brake pedal does not cancel the cruise, there's the culprit.

Does the cruise cut-off switch use the brake light switch in our cars?

I was replacing the brake switch in my SAAB and mistook the cruise cut-off for the brake switch... I ended up having to replace both

two switches on the cruise control, yes... but one of them is that brake switch.

seriously, its too easy just to check the fuse first. ive seen filaments break at one end and drop down in the bulb causing an internal short, also he mentioned that the 3rd brake light was recently removed. its rare to see a failed brake switch, unless you drive a taurus

It gotta be a fuse, I'm pretty sure that's what that is.
If it is there's always an extra one, unless you used them all. Check the fuse box and see if that's what that is.

Ok, I looked in the fuse box under the dash and out in the engine compartment and I don't see any identified as the brake light fuse. where might I find this fuse?

thanks for everyones input

looks to be fuse 2in the block, 15A, which gets power from 80A fuse J in the box. power from fuse to brake switch is r/y wire, and from there its a r/g to the brake bulbs.

if you need more i can email you a wiring diagram, just PM me your email

I still haven't gotten these things to work. I confirmed that the fuse is good. There is power on fuse terminal in the fuse box.

Does one of the switches on the brake serve as the sensor to allow shifting into drive? If so, Is it the brake light switch or the cruise switch?

I disconnected one of the switches and could not detect power on either terminal (ignition off), the car would start and shift into drive, cruise control would power on but would not set. I should have checked for power once I started it but I didn't. I suspect that I was dealing with the cruise switch but would like others to confirm or correct me if possible.

Thanks
Dean
